MINISTER SLAMS SALMON POLLUTION CLAIM

A Government minister has slammed a BBC documentary which claims farmed salmon can contain huge amounts of pesticides and chemicals as "wildly inaccurate". Scottish Office Minister Brian Wilson said the BBC had let "zealots" present "half-baked unscientific conclusions". Thousands of jobs in rural areas may be at risk as a result he added. Mr Wilson said one expert whose work is featured on BBC2's Warnings from the Wild tomorrow has disowned the show.

BLAIR "PROUD" OF LABOUR'S £6M DONORS

Tony Blair has said Labour should not be embarrassed for accepting donations of £6M from three wealthy businessmen. He told the BBC's Breakfast with Frost he was "proud" to have attracted support from successful entrepreneurs. The PM also said suggestions of a link between a £100 000 gift from Lord Bourne & the sale of the Millennium Dome to his company were "nonsense". He said the public did not support state funding of political parties.

"MOST POLICE EVER" PROMISED BY BLAIR

Britain will have the largest number of police officers in its history if Labour wins the next General Election Tony Blair has said. He told BBC's Breakfast With Frost that staffing levels were rising nationally for the first time in seven years. Mr Blair said he had the money to recruit "more police than ever" within four years of being re-elected. The number of officers has fallen by 3 000 since Labour's victory in 1997.

PUB CHAIN PLEDGES TO CREATE 3 000 JOBS

JD Wetherspoon plans to open 110 new pubs this year creating 3 000 jobs as part of a huge expansion scheme. The company is to invest £140m on developing new sites. Pubs will open in Manchester Leeds Tamworth Glasgow Brighton Coleraine Swindon Widnes Newmarket & London. JD Wetherspoon wants to create 30 000 jobs over the decade opening 1 000 pubs in buildings like former banks post offices shops & cinemas.

"ECONOMY CLASS" DEATH FAMILY MAY SUE

The family of an alleged victim of "economy class syndrome" is considering suing the airline for compensation. Thomas Lamb 68 died in November of deep vein thrombosis following a long- haul flight from Heathrow to Melbourne. Daughter Linda Jones said: "Somebody is responsible for this & they have to be held to account." But a Singapore Airlines spokesman said the company was "concerned" for the health & comfort of passengers.

BODY UPHOLDS BLAIR BROADCAST COMPLAINTS

The Independent Television Commission has upheld opposition parties' complaints over ITV's question & answer session with the prime minister. Parties in Scotland complained Labour was being given an unfair advantage in the programme ` since it was broadcast 10 days before the Falkirk by-election. The watchdog body said the broadcast was relevant to the by-election. It said the opposition parties should be allowed to comment on the issues of the day in the same way as Tony Blair.
