REDWOOD TELLS PM TO MAKE UP MIND ON EMU

Leading Tory Euro-sceptic John Redwood says the Prime Minister must abandon his wait-and-see policy on a single European currency. He urged John Major to declare that Britain would not sign up to the first wave of monetary union in 1999. Mr Redwood told Radio 4 the PM would have the support of the overwhelming majority of his Cabinet if he did. Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine has said there will be no such move.

BULLIMORE "MAY NEED HOSPITAL TREATMENT"

Rescued yachtsman Tony Bullimore may be in worse condition than first thought the Australian government has said. Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer told reporters that the Briton who spent four days in an air pocket in his upturned yacht may need hospitalisation Mr Bullimore 56 may have to have a frost-bitten finger amputated. Describing the moment he saw the Australian ship HMAS Adelaide he said: "It was heaven."

A melee involving PR guru Max Clifford and several TV chat show guests including the Deputy Prime Minister's daughter erupted this morning. A glass of water was spilled on Annabel Heseltine as tempers flared between the PR man & Conservative MP Roger Gale minutes before BBC's Kilroy went live. Host Robert Kilroy-Silk & ex-Labour politician Derek Hatton became involved The show then heatedly discussed Mr Clifford's anti-Tory media campaign.

THOUSANDS GATHER IN PROTEST AT GUN BAN

Around 9 000 people have gathered in London to protest against Government plans to ban most types of handgun following last year's Dunblane killings People carried banners bearing slogans saying "we're not the guilty" and "unfair unethical & un-British". The protesters claim a ban would not prevent another massacre. After the rally in Trafalgar Square a petition containing 64 000 names was handed in to 10 Downing Street.

WOMAN DIES AFTER FALLING INTO THAMES

A woman has died after falling into the River Thames at Reading in order to save a dog. Janet Norman 52 from Reading was out walking with her husband & her neighbour's dog when the animal jumped on to the ice-covered river. She ventured on to the ice to save the dog but the ice broke & she fell in. Mrs Norman was pulled from the river by fire crews after 90 minutes but was pronounced dead in hospital.

EXAMS Almost half the English 'A' Level students at King Edward VI School in Birmingham have had their exam results upgraded after a row by the head teacher over low-marking. DEATH Variety singer Cavan O'Connor has died in hospital in London at the age at 97. He recorded more than 500 discs with his best known songs being "I'm only a strolling vagabond" & "I'll take you home again Kathleen".
