A trade union leader has said he is "dumbfounded" at plans that a future Labour government would intervene in industrial disputes. Aslef boss Lew Adams accused Shadow Employment Secretary David Blunkett of "kicking the unions in the teeth". Mr Adams dismissed plans for fresh ballots if employers made "significant new offers" to their staff. He says it will not work because nobody can say what a significant offer is.

A gun club official faces a police innquiry after being accused of keeping live ammunition at the primary school where he worked. Caretaker Paul Fell was arrested after gunpowder bullets and six replica pistols were discovered in a storeroom police say. The alleged find was made at Norden Community School Rochdale Lancashire.
