LABOUR UNDER FIRE FOR "UNION BASHING"

A trade union leader has said he is "dumbfounded" at plans that a future Labour government would intervene in industrial disputes. Aslef boss Lew Adams accused Shadow Employment Secretary David Blunkett of "kicking the unions in the teeth". Mr Adams dismissed plans for fresh ballots if employers made "significant new offers" to their staff. He says it will not work because nobody can say what a significant offer is.

He argued the Millennium Volunteers plan bore no resemblance to American- style Workfare schemes. It has won a broad welcome from employers & voluntary organisations. But the unions are remaining cautious.

Nicholas Jones: Shadow Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said it was important that Labour reminded itself to its commitment to make society fairer. Mr Cook said he knew Mr Blair was concerned about helping those most in need. But delegates uneasy about the giving up of some Labour pledges will see it as a reminder of traditional positions.

TORY MP IN EDUCATION TALKS WITH LABOUR

A Conservative MP has revealed he has discussed his education views with senior advisers from the Labour Party. Former education minister George Walden said he announced the contact to avoid secret meeting slurs. Mr Walden said it would have been infantile to have rejected the approach He added that he had no intention of defecting. A Labour spokesman stressed that the party had no intention of persuding Mr Walden to do so.

CIVILIAN FIRM WINS FORCES 'COPTER DEAL

A £400m contract for the training of military helicopter pilots at a central flying school has been awarded to a civilian firm. Defence consortium FBS Ltd will use 47 civilian helicopters to train all Army Royal Navy & RAF helicopter pilots. The new operation at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire is expected to save £80m. But some trainee Army pilots will continue to use the Army base at Middle Wallop to avoid congestion at Shawbury.

SCHOOL CARETAKER IN WEAPONS INQUIRY

A gun club official faces a police innquiry after being accused of keeping live ammunition at the primary school where he worked. Caretaker Paul Fell was arrested after gunpowder bullets and six replica pistols were discovered in a storeroom police say. The alleged find was made at Norden Community School Rochdale Lancashire. Mr Fell 36 is safety officer at Bury Gun Club.
