The Samaritans have called for more

understanding of the problem of stress at work. Female doctors have a risk of suicide three times that of the average woman. Job insecurity & fewer people doing more work are identified as the stress factors of the 90s. The Samaritans challenge the taboo which says personal problems should not be allowed to interfere with work & they highlight the effectiveness of employer helpline schemes.

NAVY BASE TO SHED MORE THAN 300 JOBS

More than 300 jobs are to go at Portsmouth Naval base the Ministry of Defence has announced. The cuts are to be made by next March the MoD said. They will reduce the workforce at the base to under 1 000 ` less than half the number of 11 years ago. Unions say the cuts will leave the base with too few skilled workers to prepare a fleet in an emergency such as the Falklands crisis.
