EU CONSIDERS INVITE TO MID EAST TALKS

European Union leaders are considering a request by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to take part in the Middle East peace talks with Israel. Mr Arafat suggested the EU should be involved after meeting French President Jacques Chirac yesterday in Paris. If the EU agreed to the move it would link it with the Palestinian cause a BBC correspondent says. The heads of government are in Dublin for a summit on the future of the EU.

BUSINESS IN HOUSES OF COMMONS AND LORDS

The controversial "white list" of countries thought not to give cause for asylum applications will be debated. The Government aims to deter what it believes are unjustified applications for asylum from a list of countries. Defence Estimates for 1996 & the EU Common Fisheries Policy are also due to be discussed. In the House of Lords there will be debates on European Union enlargement and the Common Agricultural policy.

PALESTINE "TO INSIST ON EXISTING DEALS"

Palestine will not renegotiate deals already made with Israel the Egyptian foreign minister has said. Amr Mussa was speaking after Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak met PLO leader Yasser Arafat ahead of talks between the two countries starting tomorrow. He condemned Israel's stance as "unfair" "hardline" & "negative". Israel wants to renegotiate agreements to redeploy its troops from Palestinian cities it occupies.

WIFE-KILLER BRITON FREED 20 YEARS EARLY

A Briton jailed in Spain for murdering his wife has been freed after serving just four years of a 24-year sentence. Former oil executive Stuart Hutchinson 52 was released after a change in Spanish laws on foreign prisoners. He bludgeoned his opera-singer wife Alice 38 to death at their villa near Marbella on the Costa Del Sol in 1989. Using a saw & axe he dismembered the body & burned some of the remains dumping other parts on building sites.

CANADIAN CALL FOR BAN ON LAND MINES

The Canadian government has called for better international cooperation to ban anti-personnel mines. These mines kill 500 people every week. Representatives of more than 60 countries are discussing the issue at a conference in Ottawa. A UN conference earlier this year agreed to limit the use of mines. Russia & the Czech Republic are two countries that have opposed a ban.

CASH AWARD FOR TEACHER ATTACKED BY GIRL

A woman teacher forced to take early retirement after being injured by a pupil has received the largest compensation package of its kind. She was awarded £95 000 after being assaulted by a 13-year-old girl. The name of the woman who was teaching at a special school in the Midlands has not been released. Her case was backed by the National Union of Teachers which sees violence against teachers as a serious problem.

His boss Secretary of State Warren Christopher is having talks with both Benjamin Netanyahu & Yasser Arafat. Mr Christopher told reporters it was urgent the new talks produce significant results quickly.
