The Court of Appeal has quashed the

manslaughter conviction of a former Army information officer. Peter Gould: Lord Bingham said the passage of time might influence the Appeal Court's judgement about the desirability of ordering a new trial now. But it did not alter their opinion that the conviction should be quashed. Counsel for the Crown said they would be seeking a fresh trial. Mr Wallace said he wanted a fresh police inquiry into the case.

ELEPHANTS DRINK ALCOHOL FACTORY DRY

Six illegal Indian breweries have been destroyed by a herd of elephants. The 45-strong herd charged out of the hills southwest of Calcutta in search of water. But they ended up in the illegal breweries according to officials. District forest officer Mahendra Pande said the damage was done in two days. "They are notoriously famous for their fondness towards liquor " he said.

OUSTED COMMANDER CLAIMS TALEBAN TRIUMPH

Forces ousted from the Afghan capital Kabul by the Taleban militia are claiming major victories during fierce fighting in the north of the country. A spokesman for commander Ahmed Shah Masood said his troops had pushed Taleban forces out of several areas. The Taleban has denied aid workers' reports of heavy casualties. International relief teams reported that a foreign aid worker was arrested and then beaten by Taleban militia men.
