CLARKE URGES TORY

UNITY ON EUROPE The Chancellor has appealed to Tories to unite behind the Government's policy of deferring the decision on whether we should join a European single currency. Insisting it was in Britain's interests "to keep all our options open" he urged Conservatives to concentrate on winning the next election. Last night Mr Clarke appeared to risk widening Tory rifts over Europe. He told a fringe meeting that pro- Europeans were winning the arguments over the EU.

The Prime

Minister's speech at the Conservative Party Conference: All the main Conservative themes of the forthcoming election campaign were brought together for the first time by John Major. The speech was well received but it did not seem to ignite the conference in the way Malcolm Rifkind & Kenneth Clarke had done earlier in the week. Mr Major's aides explained it was meant to be a fireside chat.

11th October 1996

The Prime

Minister's speech at the Conservative Party Conference: Inevitably after a prolonged period of party squabbling there was the call for unity. Mr Major said he thought everyone in the Conservative Party would "work heart & soul" to ensure a Tory victory at the next election.

Police in Ulster have arrested a man in

connection with the Lisburn bombing. The Government has not abandoned all hope of Sinn Fein ever joining the multi-party talks. After the harsh words of John Major in the aftermath of the bombing ministers have made it clear that Sinn Fein can join the talks but only after the IRA has declared a "credible ceasefire". The prospect of that in the wake of the bombing seems more remote than ever.

NURSES TURN RED EYES AGAINST JOHN MAJOR

Nurses are turning the Tories' red eyes image against the Government. Instead of demonic eyes pasted on the face of Labour leader Tony Blair their poster campaign features bloodshot eyes in the face of an exhausted nurse. It was put together by public workers' union Unison & the NHS Support Federation an independent group. Nurses are worried about understaffing overworking stress & pay explained a spokesman.
