ASHDOWN APPLAUDS DEFECTOR'S DECISION

Tory MP Peter Thurnham's defection to the Liberal Democrats was a "brave decision" Paddy Ashdown has said. The Liberal Democrat leader said Mr Thurnham's move would be "respected by many" in Britain. Labour leader Tony Blair in South Africa said it showed "even life-long Tories are turning away". A Conservative spokesman said the defection did not change anything and the move had been expected.

Sir James Goldsmith has denied using his wealth to distort the political process through his Referendum Party. The party is putting up candidates against those it says are against a referendum on the future of Britain's place in Europe. US PEACE KEEPERS BEGIN BOSNIA EXODUS

The first batch of US peacekeeping troops to be withdrawn from Bosnia are heading for their barracks in Germany. They are being redeployed under the terms of President Clinton's agreement with Congress which required the 15 000 soldiers to remain for a defined period A substantial number will remain for next month's municipal elections. But more US troops will replace them as Nato members acknowledge the need to cover the withdrawal of the Ifor force.
