ACCUSED IN WIDOW BURNING CASE ACQUITTED

An Indian court has acquitted all those accused in the case of a widow burned to death on her husband's funeral pyre. The death of Roop Kanwar in 1987 captured international attention. Her husband's family said she insisted on submitting to the outlawed custom of Sati or widow burning. Others said she had been drugged or put under duress. The judge said the case against the accused had not been proved. Women's groups are likely to mount an appeal.

After the ruling the father of one of the murdered girls accused the court of spitting on their graves. Emotions are now running higher than ever in a case which has already prompted the Belgian king to demand an overhaul of the entire judicial system.

INQUIRY INTO HOSPITAL TRANSFER DEATH

An inquiry has been launched in Greater Manchester after a male heart patient died while being transferred by ambulance between two hospitals. The ambulance crew is reported to have "lost their way" because of road works between Hope Hospital in Salford & Manchester Royal Infirmary. It took 28 minutes to cover the four miles between the two hospitals. It is not known if the delay contributed to the man's death.

LIFE SENTENCE FOR "BARBARIC" MURDERER

A man who disembowelled a disabled pensioner with his hands while under the influence of drink & drugs has been jailed for life. Adrian Beckley 29 of Gravesend Kent pleaded guilty to the murder of arthritis victim Mary Louise Smith 71. The widow was repeatedly beaten & kicked before being disembowelled. The judge at Maidstone Crown Court called the crime "a murder of the utmost cruelty & barbarism".

Sarah Ransome: Mr Dickinson said he had made the trip to satisfy himself that improved security measures were in place to prevent future attacks. CAR FOUND FOLLOWING HIT-AND-RUN DEATH

Police are questioning a man about a hit-and-run incident in which a teenage girl was left dying in the road. Rhian Rogers 15 was hit in the Ely area of Cardiff. She was rushed to the Royal Infirmary but attempts to revive her failed. The driver stopped briefly after the accident but then sped off. The man being interviewed was not driving the car at the time it was found police said.

POLICE APPEAL TO MAN OVER MISSING GIRL

Detectives have urged a man who has disappeared with his landlady's 10- year-old daughter after the pair left for a coastal walk to contact them. They say they are worried about Ann- Marie Radbourne who left her home in Paignton Devon with Paul Husbands 51 on Sunday morning. Police said at a press conference that the pair often went for walks together. Mr Husbands had little to fear if the girl was safe a spokesman added.

RIVAL'S LOST WHEEL GIVES HILL VICTORY

Damon Hill is celebrating after storming to victory in the Japanese Grand Prix & the world championship. The world title was assured when Hill's arch rival Jacques Villeneuve lost a wheel 16 laps from home. The headmaster who once advised Hill against a career in motor sport said he was delighted by the win. Hill has become the first son of a world champion to win the title: father Graham triumphed in 1962 & 1968.

POPE TO RETURN TO VATICAN AFTER SURGERY

The Pope is to leave hospital tomorrow a week after surgery to remove his appendix the Vatican has announced. A statement said 76-year-old Pope John Paul would return to the Vatican for further convalescence before gradually resuming his daily activities. It said his post-operative recovery was continuing in a satisfactory manner. Doctors at Rome's Gemelli hospital will remove his stitches in the morning before the Pope's departure at midday.
