The Israeli Prime Minister has publicly apologised to the French President after a complaint about the behaviour of the security forces in Jerusalem. Jacques Chirac said he was swamped by police as he tried to walk among the crowd in the Arab area of the city. He lodged a formal protest with the Israeli government. UN aid workers in Zaire are trying to locate hundreds of thousands of Hutu refugees who have fled camps after ethnic fighting broke out.
