LOTTERY MID-WEEK DRAW "MAY BE NEAR"

Plans for a mid-week National Lottery draw may get the go-ahead by the end of the week Camelot has said. The organiser claims it will mean an extra £3m a week for good causes. But opponents say the lottery promotes gambling & draws under-age children. Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomely refused to confirm reports but denied it would lead to excessive gambling. The average person only staked a modest #2.30 a week she claimed.

MAJOR ASKED TO INTERVENE IN "MI5" CASE

A man who had his conviction for manslaughter overturned after a 16-year fight has asked the Prime Minister to intervene in his case. Colin Wallace from Arundel in West Sussex served six years in prison for killing an antiques dealer. But he always maintained that he was framed by MI5. Mr Wallace wants John Major to call an independent Government-backed inquiry to look into the allegations.

OVERDOSE ALERT CLOSES BABY DRUGS TRIAL

An international clinical trial has been suspended amid an alert over drugs overdoses given to babies in tests being coordinated at a Leeds hospital. An inquiry has been ordered after doctors at Leeds General Infirmary found some newborn babies had been given double the safe dose. More than 50 babies in eight European countries - including 39 in hospitals in Britain - were involved in the trial None of them died from the overdoses.

GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES LAWRENCE AWARD

The Government is setting up an annual good citizenship award for young people in memory of the murdered head teacher Philip Lawrence. The move is in response to a manifesto for good citizenship published by Mr Lawrence's widow yesterday. Home Secretary Michael Howard said he hoped the move would mean that "some good may come of this tragic event". Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown said better nursery schools would help.
