UNION VOTE MEANS MORE POSTAL STRIKES

Postal workers have voted 61% in favour of more strike action. Alan Johnson joint general secretary of the Communication Workers Union said the voting was an "unquestionable mandate" to reject Royal Mail proposals The union will meet Royal Mail managers for further talks over the next week. President of the Board of Trade Ian Lang announced he would suspend the Post Office monopoly for three months if further postal strikes took place.

The situation in Zaire is deteriorating

rapidly as fighting intensifies. Jane Standley reports: The UN is trying to evacuate at least 100 relief workers from around Goma after heavy mortar & machine gunfire on the outskirts of the town. But Zaire has closed its border with Rwanda & the UN is trying to secure permission from the capital Kinshasa to allow an evacuation by road. There are also confused reports about who is in control of Goma airport.

AID WORKERS DECIDE TO PULL OUT OF GOMA The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has decided to evacuate all its international staff from the Zairean city of Goma as fighting intensifies. The city has been rocked by escalating artillery shelling in a battle between soldiers & ethnic Tutsi rebels. Earlier the UN said it was unclear who had control of the city's airport the centre for efforts to aid refugees. Meanwhile Zaire has rejected calls for talks to end the fighting.
