FOOTBALL TYCOON HANDS BLAIR RECORD GIFT

Millionaire tycoon & football fanatic Matthew Harding has pledged £1m to the Labour Party for its election campaign. Mr Harding co-owner of Chelsea the club supported by John Major & former minister David Mellor says there is no conflict between wealth & New Labour. "In America you can be fabulously wealthy & be a Democrat " he said. "Tony Blair is the best leader for our country." It is the biggest donation from an individual Labour has received.

The village controls a key junction on the road to Sulaimaniya the last major stronghold of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. Of most concern is whether Iraqi forces are helping the KDP. They are west of Degala & their guns are in range.

PAISLEY THREATENS LOYALIST LEGAL ACTION

Democratic Unionist leader Ian Paisley has threatened legal action against London & Dublin if some loyalists are not expelled from multi-party talks. He said he would seek a judicial review unless the Progressive Unionists & Ulster Democratic Unionists were banned The parties represent the political wing of protestant paramilitaries. Multi-party talks have been adjourned until Tuesday while the two governments consider Mr Paisley's demand.

WORLD "MUST SEND CLEAR MESSAGE TO IRAQ"

Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind has pledged that any further aggression by Iraq will meet a tough response. He told the BBC's Today programme it had to be made clear to Saddam Hussein that "he loses more than he gains" from each act of aggression. Mr Rifkind emphasised that Britain was not alone among EU nations in backing US missile strikes against Iraq. And he said those opposing the strikes had put forward no alternative strategy

EU UNITED FRONT ON CRITICISM OF SADDAM

EU foreign ministers have agreed on a condemnation of Saddam Hussein's agression against the Kurds. But the ministers meeting in the Irish Republic failed to resolve differences over the extension of the no-fly zone. French Foreign Minister Herve de Charette refused to endorse US missile attacks on Iraqi positions. Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind urged critics of the US to come up with a "credible alternative" to the US action

IRAQI FORCES "SUPPORTING KURDISH KDP"

Saddam Hussein's forces are being accused of supporting one of two rival Kurdish groups - the KDP - involved in heavy fighting in northern Iraq. Rival Kurd group the PUK says the KDP has seized two strategic towns Degala and Koi Sanjak with the support of Iraqi artillery & tanks. Hundreds have fled the area which is close to the regional capital Arbil where the PUK was ousted a week ago. The PUK has urged the US to intervene. Saddam "must pay for aggression"162

TUC ACCUSES GOVERNMENT OVER WORK STRESS

Overwork & stress are the biggest threats to workers' health & the Government should act against them the TUC has demanded. Of 7 000 trade union health & safety officials surveyed two-thirds said stress was a major concern. The TUC blamed management for creating a "pressure cooker environment" at work General Secretary John Monks called on the Government to stop opposing EU plans for a maximum 48-hour week.

UNIONS PRESS LABOUR OVER MINIMUM WAGE

Two of the biggest unions the Transport Workers & Unison have urged the TUC annual conference to demand a minimum wage of £4.26 an hour. Unison general secretary Rodney Bickerstaffe told GMTV on the eve of the conference that Britain's poor deserved "the hope of a minimum wage". The issue was a "matter of decency". TUC general secretary John Monks has made clear that he is against setting a precise figure before the election.
