KURDISH REFUGEES RETURN TO SULEYMANIYAH

Thousands of Kurdish refugees who fled the northern Iraqi city of Suleymaniyah when it fell to an Iraqi-backed Kurdish faction have been returning home. They were supporters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan ` the Kurdistan Democratic Party later seized the city. They had been fearful of the advancing KDP but were apparently reassured by an amnesty announced by KDP leaders. Meanwhile Tehran says thousands of Kurds have crossed the border into Iran

A TUC debate on workers' rights has

revealed more differences with Labour. Sharp differences have emerged this week between the unions & Labour. They were highlighted again in the employment law debate. Labour is promising to guarantee that workers are free to join a union & that where there is a majority vote in a ballot the union should be recognised But the TUC wants Labour to go further.

Industrial action on the railways is

spreading. The union has had to negotiate & ballot company by company. Some have already agreed pay increases or are holding talks. Others have held out & they are the ones being hit. RMT general secretary Jimmy Knapp said he regretted the disruption but blamed the train operators.

MORE STRIKES LIKELY AFTER DISRUPTION

The rail dispute is set to escalate after a day of disruption with services cancelled as workers went on strike. Members of the RMT union in four regions ranging from the North East & North West to south Wales & the West Country walked out for 24 hours. The action over productivity pay had "significant impact" the union said. Tomorrow the union announces the result of strike ballots in eight other operators with a "yes" vote expected.

revealed more differences with Labour. Labour's proposals fall far short of the changes the TUC would like to see. It wants all employees including casual & agency workers to get full rights from their first day at work. They also want the right for solidarity industrial action. These demands were approved overwhelmingly by conference delegates.
