BANK PRESENTS SINGLE CURRENCY REPORT

The Governor of the Bank of England has presented the second progress report on European Monetary Union. Eddie George said many institutions in Britain realised there was a "political commitment" to EMU on the continent. And there was a growing awarness of what EMU would mean for them even if Britain did not join Mr George said. He stressed the report was about the technical preparations for EMU & not "about the pros & cons of joining".

reconsider a cull of cattle at risk from BSE. Britain is committed to a cull agreement reached at the EU heads of government meeting in Florence in June. That deal involved the slaughter of nearly 130 000 cattle thought to be at high risk from developing BSE. UK Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg now argues the latest scientific research shows a cull on this scale is unjustified.

CALL FOR REDUCED CATTLE CULL REJECTED

The European Commission has rejected Britain's call for a reduction in the cattle slaughter programme. The worldwide ban on UK beef exports could not be lifted unless the agreed cull went ahead a spokesman said. Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg has suggested that Britain might ignore EU demands to slaughter 127 000 cattle in the fight to eradicate BSE. Mr Hogg said scientific evidence showed the slaughter was unjustified.

MOVES TO LIFT SECRECY OVER SWISS BANKS

The Swiss government has agreed to an official inquiry into the whereabouts of both Nazi & Jewish wealth held in Swiss banks during World War II. It has backed a bill to set up a commission which would have the power to lift Swiss bank secrecy laws. The move comes in the wake of claims that Switzerland might still be harbouring Nazi gold. The action must still be ratified by the Swiss parliament.

rises for the public sector should be lower than this year. Ed Crooks: Public sector review bodies formally set the pay of about 1m workers & there are 4m more who follow their lead The Government has made control of the public sector's £80bn wage bill a key weapon for keeping public spending down This year the review bodies recommended rises ranging between 2% nationally - with scope for an extra locally agreed increase - & almost 7%.
