POISON GAS MAY HAVE AFFECTED US TROOPS

At least 5 000 US troops may have been exposed to Iraqi poison gas during the Gulf War the Pentagon has said. The soldiers were within 25 kilometres of an Iraqi munitions dump when it was destroyed by American troops in March 1991 a spokesman said. It is to carry out medical checks to see about evidence of contamination. The US & Britain deny "Gulf War Syndrome" exists which sufferers say has symptoms similar to gas poisoning.

Labour plans to abolish child benefit

for over-16s. Nicholas Jones: The new benefit will be tied firmly to children carrying on in education or training. It will be topped up above the basic rate for poorer families. Labour are not saying for the moment how many rich families will lose out from this change. The Conservatives who have attacked the dropping of child benefit as a teenage tax say parents do not know what will happen.

CLARKE SLATES TEBBIT'S EMU TURNAROUND

The Chancellor has attacked Lord Tebbit for saying that Britain should rule out joining a single EU currency. Kenneth Clarke said Lord Tebbit had been one of the strongest advocates of early entry the Exchange Rate Mechanism "I am sorry Norman Tebbit has got so out of tune with the policy of the Conservative Party " he said. Earlier the former Tory chairman said the resignations of pro-single currency ministers "was a price worth paying".

Britain's cattle cull decision: Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler said as long as Britain did not meet the preconditions then an end to the worldwide export ban was impossible. It seems the European Commission is making clear that if the British Government does ask for exemption for some beef its request will be refused. Farmers in Northern Ireland had been encouraged by signs from the Commission that they could benefit.

MINISTERS AGREE EXCHANGE RATE FORMULA

EU finance ministers have agreed a plan to maintain exchange rate stability between the single European currency and countries which remain outside it. They agreed at their meeting in Dublin to limit exchange rate fluctuations. Earlier Irish Finance Minister Ruairi Quinn told BBC Radio Britain's failure to decide its stance over monetary union was hindering EU progress. He also said it meant the UK's views would not be given so much weight.

UNIONIST MAYOR LOSES HIGH COURT ACTION

The Unionist Mayor of Derry Richard Dallas has lost his High Court action to regain the trappings of office. He was stripped of his privileges after taking part in a loyalist blockade. The incident took place at the Craigavon Bridge in the city at the time of the Drumcree stand-off in July. The judge Mr Justice Kerr dismissed the mayor's application for judicial review in the High Court in Belfast.
