INTERNATIONAL APPEAL FOR PEACE TALKS

Britain France & Germany are among the countries calling for a summit between Israelii Premier Benjamin Netanyahu & Yasser Arafat. The crisis is being discussed by the UN Security Council in New York. The Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy denied his government had reneged on peace agreements. Earlier Palestinian President Yasser Arafat also appealed to Israel to resume peace moves.

in Jerusalem: Although it has been a relatively quiet morning the sporadic violence indicates that tensions remain high. In the West Bank Israeli soldiers fired tear-gas & plastic bullets during clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians near Hebron. There has been further unrest in other parts of the occupied territories & in East Jerusalem with security forces deployed on both sides as deterrents.

US OFFERS TO HOST ARAB-ISRAELI SUMMIT

The United States has offered to host an Israeli-Arab summit in a bid to resolve the latest Middle East crisis. Israeli government sources said the US suggested other Arab leaders including Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak & Jordon's King Hussein attend the talks. A meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu & Palestinian President Yasser Arafat failed to take place today. The two leaders may meet in a few days.

in Jerusalem: It is feared that the funerals of some of those killed in recent days may present more potential flashpoints. Palestinians in some parts of the West Bank are observing a general strike to mourn more than 50 people who have died in the fighting since Wednesday. Both sides' leaders are under intense pressure to meet & find a solution to the crisis. But there are serious disagreements over venue & format.

REEBOK NIKE TEAM UP

TO END CHILD LABOUR International sports goods firm Reebok has invited arch rival Nike to team up to try to stamp out child labour at their factories around the world. Reebok chairman Paul Fireman said he had written to his Nike counterpart to suggest that a common approach to the problem could have "awesome results". Both firms came under fire for using child labour in developing countries including Indonesia India & Pakistan Pakistani sub-contractors were using children to stitch footballs.
