SETBACK FOR REBELS AS COMMANDER KILLED
The senior military commander of the rebel Taleban militia in Afghanistan Mullah Borjan has been killed in clashes close to the capital Kabul. A Taleban spokesman said heavy losses were suffered by the group in fighting in the eastern suburbs. According to the UN the capital is on the brink of falling to the militia. The fighting has forced the Red Cross to evacuate about 50 foreign diplomats and aid workers from Kabul.

The Taleban have strengthened their
grip on Afghanistan. Alan Pearce: The Taleban have advanced on two fronts. They now control positions just south of the Salang Tunnel in the Hindu Kush mountains. Units of General Dostam's army have moved south to face the threat. His commander at the tunnel said he had orders to repel any attack. Just a short distance down the road the Taleban are massing their troops.

The Taleban have strengthened their
grip on Afghanistan. Alan Pearce: The Taleban commander said he had sent a letter calling on General Dostam's forces to stand aside & allow them to enter his territory. He said that if this was not done then the Taleban would enter fighting. Noone will stand in our way said the commander because we are God's troops.

ISRAELIS SEND TANKS INTO THE WEST BANK
The Israeli army has begun a special operation to quell further Palestinian unrest in the West Bank. The operation dubbed Cotton Field involves the deployment of tanks & attack helicopters in the area. The army will now use "all means possible to confront Palestinian threats an army source said. Earlier Israeli soldiers fired tear gas & rubber bullets at stone- throwing Palestinians in the West Bank.

WHY UK REJECTED "ANTI-SOCIAL" CHAPTER
The Government has renewed its attack on the Social Chapter warning it would threaten British jobs & opportunities Launching a guide explaining why the Government had opted out Board of Trade President Ian Lang said it was "tantamount to signing a blank cheque". "It would lead to higher costs more restrictions & higher unemployment." Labour has said it would sign up to the agreement which governs social policy in other EC countries.
