However he told MPs it was time for the EU to find "a more rational way of decision making". Tory leader William Hague said the summit had produced "three major steps to a European superstate". A merger between house building groups Bryant & Beazer will lead to 300 jobs being axed. The cuts will be made across the country & will include a number of administrative posts. Beazer's John Low is to be chief executive of the new group with Bryant's Peter Long as his deputy.

The spending watchdog has urged caution on the Government as it plans to part- privatise the London Underground. Under the scheme the Tube's track would stay in public ownership but stations would be leased to companies bringing in £8bn for the network. Scientists have created the world's first genetically modified monkey it has been disclosed. The team from Oregon in the US said the breakthrough will speed up the development of new treatments for treating human diseases.
