The 1 000lbs of explosives found inside a van in the grounds of Belfast Castle were ready for use as a massive IRA bomb the RUC has suggested. Supt Mike Brown said he believed the IRA's intention had been to lure police officers & soldiers into the grounds. The IRA had intended to engage in "mass murder" of security force members. The massive bomb consisted of 16 bags of home-made fertiliser explosives & a push-button firing pack.

JAIL FOR MAFIOSI AFTER 10-YEAR TRIAL

Thirty-eight Italians on trial in Sicily in connection with Mafia crimes have been sentenced to jail terms totalling more than 300 years. Among those sentenced are the two sons of US crime boss Gaetano Badalamenti who is serving a 45-year jail term. The sentences are the culmination of a 10-year trial begun by two judges Giovanni Falcone & Paolo Borsellino. The judges were murdered in 1992 in two Mafia attacks on the island.

SERIOUS CRIME IN BIG APPLE DOWN AGAIN

New York City has seen a sharp drop in the rate of serious crime for the third year running. During 1996 there were fewer than 1 000 murders making New York one of the safest big cities in the United States. Serious crime in the city is now at its lowest rate for nearly 30 years. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said the reason for the fall was a bigger police department & firmer action against street crime.

A woman's body has been found in the garden of a house in Sutton Coldfield West Midlands late this morning police have said. They described the death as suspicious. ELDERLYA housing association is to examine its procedures after an elderly resident's body lay undiscovered in a warden-controlled flat in Thetford Norfolk for two weeks. PARADE Around 100 000 spectators have braved arctic temperatures to watch the London Parade. Some 8 000 marched from Parliament Square to Berkeley Square.

SHARP RISE FOR XMAS DRINK-DRIVING CASES

The number of motorists who tested postive when breathalysed over the Christmas period was up 18% police have said. Drivers testing positive or refusing to give samples numbered 5 209 compared with last year's figure of 4 330 senior police officers reported. Alcohol-related accidents rose 4% to 974 over the period they added. People were still prepared to risk the lives of others a spokesman said.
