SHOTS ARE FIRED INSIDE LIMA RESIDENCE

Three bursts of gunfire have been heard at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima where Marxist rebels are holding 74 hostages. Witnesses said the bursts were heard in rapid succession. It was the largest burst of gunfire since the Tupac Amaru guerrillas stormed the compound on December 17. Hours earlier the rebels had demanded a television interview to respond to new government proposals.

TUBE PRIVATISATION "BEING CONSIDERED"

The Government is prepared to consider privatising London Underground to improve investment in the system the Transport Secretary has confirmed. Sir George Young recalled John Major's commitment to studying the possibility at the Tory party conference in October "That exercise is now under way " Sir George told MPs at question time. He was speaking in the wake of weekend reports that Tories would privatise the Underground if they won the election.
