Despite the continued fall in counted

unemployment the Employment Service has trebled benefit sanctions imposed on claimants since becoming a performance-driven agency in 1994. These sanctions contribute to annual performance targets & are incredibly classed as a positive outcome for Restart interviews! Viewers should contact MPs & seek action to curb this punitive practice. Mr A Forsyth Glasgow

"The Tories always boast about their opt-out from Europe but this is one opt-out too many " he said.

But Labour & the Lib Dems say the committee should be balanced now that both sides of the House have 323 MPs. They are threatening to put it to a vote in the Commons unless the dispute is settled & the committee to study the Finance Bill is appointed.

I am not a vegetarian but the

following statement had me considering the issue: Every two seconds somewhere in the world a child starves to death. If people in the West cut meat consumption by 10% there would be enough vegetable foods redirected from animal feed to starving people to feed everyone. Is a 10% cut too much to ask? R Taylor (letters 13/1) states that

teachers are the best paid part-timers in the country. The teachers I know are hard-working professionals who are happy to cope with the stresses of teaching. Teachers are leaving due to the stress caused by bad management underfunding and being used as a scapegoat by the Government & the likes of R Taylor. Malcolm James Cardiff

The European parliament inquiry into

the BSE crisis doesn't go nearly far enough in criticising the Government for ignoring expert advice & covering up the growing epidemic. Our Government actually created this catastrophe by freeing the animal feed producers from controls thereby allowing them to substitute animal carcasses for expensive soya bean & fish meal. Whoever was responsible should be prosecuted. EH Wood Okehampton Devon
