EU Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert has accused BA chief executive Bob Ayling of lying in a row over BA's plan to link up with American Airlines. Mr Miert told BBC Radio that contrary to Mr Ayling's claims deals by other airlines were also being investigated. "To say we are not looking at other airlines is absolutely a lie " he said. The hunt for missing schoolgirl Kayleigh Ward has been boosted by a BBC television appeal for help. Police said more than 70 telephone calls were being followed up after last night's Crimewatch UK programme. A spokesman said the information had given officers renewed hope of finding the missing nine-year-old alive. Kayleigh disappeared from the hostel where her family were living in Chester on December 19.

Greater London has had the strongest house price rises over the past few months followed by Wales & the West Midlands according to a new survey. Lowest rises were recorded in the North and East Midlands it adds. The Halifax Britain's biggest building society examined prices throughout Britain during the last quarter of 1996 and over the year as a whole. It has already disclosed that average UK prices are 8.4% higher than in 1995.

Mrs Horlick 35 heads the £18bn UK pensions fund business at the German- owned company. The move came four months after Morgan Grenfell sacked star unit trust manager Peter Young over trade irregularities. A spokesman said Mrs Horlick had been suspended pending an internal investigation relating to potential breaches of her contract
National Express has stunned the City with news that chief executive Ernest Patterson has resigned after just five months with the bus company. Shares responded to the announcement with a fall of 4p to 540p. Mr Patterson has been replaced by Phil White the director responsible for West Midlands Travel. In a trading update National Express said it was currently performing well "on all fronts" & was looking forward to 1997 with confidence.

The Government has been plunged into a minority following the death of backbench MP for Meriden Iain Mills. The Tories now have 322 MPs & the combined opposition 323.
