The Prison Reform Society object to the

use of prison ships for criminals. Perhaps they would consider the cruise liner Canberra which is being taken out of service in September. Meanwhile would the Government make prisons ships available to law-abiding pensioners. I am sure some would be highly delighted. K Purshouse Mexborough S Yorkshire

Tony Blair says a Labour government will make education its top priority. Plans include nursery education for all four-year-olds assessed primary school entry home-school contracts literacy targets & homework guidelines. Mr Blair said on Breakfast with Frost he would work passionately to improve educational standards. He referred to a national consensus a list of qualified heads & lottery funded centres for homework.

NO HIDDEN TAXES LABOUR LEADER INSISTS

Tony Blair has again rejected Tory claims of hidden Labour tax plans. "There are no hidden spending commitments & therefore no hidden tax rises " he told Breakfast with Frost. He said that in the coming weeks Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown would spell out the rates of personal tax people would pay under Labour. And he again called for an early election. "Fingertips government is not good government " he said.

POSTER CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY GOLDSMITH

The Referendum Party has launched what it claims will be the biggest national poster campaign by a political party. It challenges the Prime Minister to give the people a chance to decide on Britain's future in Europe. The posters will initially appear at 1 500 sites around the country. Another 3 000 posters ask the question: "Why not John? Why can't we have a proper referendum on Europe Mr Major?"

TEACHERS QUEUING TO QUIT WARNS UNION

A teaching union says 12 000 members asked to take early retirement within a month of the Government announcing plans to limit the numbers leaving. The Association of Teachers & Lecturers says its members phoned up asking for retirement details. Teachers are now more anxious than when testing & the National Curriculum were introduced union bosses claim. Thousands of staff are said to want to quit before a March deadline.

EXAMS Almost half the English 'A' Level students at King Edward VI School in Birmingham have had their exam results upgraded after a row by the head teacher over low-marking. DEATH Variety singer Cavan O'Connor has died in hospital in London at the age at 97. He recorded more than 500 discs with his best known songs being "I'm only a strolling vagabond" & "I'll take you home again Kathleen".

PRINCE SUPPORTS NATIONAL STUDY CENTRES

The Prince of Wales has stressed the importance of helping disadvantaged young people develop their talents. He told a Prince's Trust conference in Edinburgh too many children under- achieved at school & failed to make the best of their abilities. The Prince underlined the value of national study support centres where children could do their homework. He said the Trust aimed to assist 1 000 study centres by the year 2000.
