JUDGE HALTS WHITEMOOR JAIL-BREAK TRIAL

The trial of five IRA prisoners & an armed robber accused of breaking out of Whitemoor jail has been halted by a judge over claims of press prejudice. The defendants' right to a fair trial was said to have been damaged by an article in the London Evening Standard. The six accused of escaping from the Cambs jail in 1994 will not be retried The judge at Woolwich Crown Court told representatives of the newspaper to appear in court tomorrow.

Home Secretary Michael Howard says prosecutors may get the right to appeal against decisions to abandon trials. His comments come after the collapse of the Whitemoor jail-break case at Woolwich Crown Court in London. The trial of five IRA men & an armed robber ended yesterday after the judge said a report in the London Evening Standard prevented a fair hearing. Editor Max Hastings who offered a full apology could face a contempt charge.

MUSICAL Pete Townshend's rock opera Tommy currently running at the West End's Shaftesbury Theatre will close on February 8 it has been confirmed. INVESTIGATION Police in east Yorkshire are investigating allegations that there were irregularities in payments of a £71 000 salary by Goole council to its town clerk Michael Wheaton. JAILA foster mother from Leeds who killed the toddler she hoped to adopt has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail by Newcastle Crown Court. He had injuries all over his body.

HINDLEY TO CHALLENGE SENTENCE RULING

Lawyers for Moors murderer Myra Hindley plan to challenge any ruling by the Home Secretary that she should spend the rest of her life in prison. The Home Office has refused to comment but the decision is expected to be confirmed to Hindley next week. Home Secretary Michael Howard is said to have ruled that the 56-year-old should never be released. Myra Hindley has spent 30 years in prison for the child killings.

TUESDAY The Government comfortably won a crucial Commons vote on the health service after offering last-minute concessions to a possible Tory rebel. Sir John Gorst withdrew his threat to vote against the Government after gaining assurances from ministers.

TRIPLE KILLER REFUSED LEAVE TO APPEAL

Steven Grieveson jailed for life for strangling three teenagers & burning their bodies has been refused leave to appeal against his conviction. Three Court of Appeal judges said they were satisfied his conviction was safe. The 25-year-old homosexual was convicted at Leeds in February 1996. The jury heard how he had sexually assaulted Thomas Kelly 18 and schoolboys David Hanson & David Grieff both 15 before killing them.

YOUTH SERIOUS AFTER SCHOOL GANG ATTACK

A youth has been taken to hospital with head injuries after being attacked ` possibly with a machete ` at a school. Police say four or five people set upon the youth who was flown by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital. The incident happened at Kidbrooke School on Corelli Road in Plumstead south-east London. It is not known if the attackers were pupils or adults. A hospital spokesman said the youth's head injuries were serious.

ADAMS CHALLENGE OVER MAINLAND BAN FAILS

A complaint by Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams against the Government's refusal to allow him into mainland Britain in 1993 has been rejected in Strasbourg. The European Commission on Human Rights threw out complaints by Mr Adams & Labour MP Tony Benn. Home Secretary Michael Howard invoked the 1989 Prevention of Terrorism Act to bar the Sinn Fein president. Mr Adams argued that his right of self- expression had been violated.
