HOWARD PRESSED TO ACT OVER WHITEMOOR

The Liberal Democrats have backed calls for a public inquiry into the circumstances of a jailbreak by five IRA men & an armed robber. Alan Beith accused the Home Secretary of trying to avoid questions over who cut two fences to help the escape. The trial of the six men from Whitemoor in Cambs was halted when a judge ruled a newspaper report prejudiced the trial But a defence counsel said evidence showed "a major cover-up".

PORTILLO ATTACKS LABOUR OVER BRITANNIA

Defence Secretary Michael Portillo has hit back at Labour's announcement that it will not pay for a new Royal Yacht. He said the Yacht would show the world "we still think highly of ourselves" claiming that Labour was "hopelessly confused" over the issue. And he accused Labour of reacting to "a few phone-in opinion polls". "We don't believe just in following public opinion. We believe in leading it " he told GMTV's Sunday Programme.

Albanian rioters have set alight the state oil company Albpetrol depot in the southern town of Patos. The attack comes after demonstrators clashed with riot police in the capital Tirana over the collapse of a nationwide network of savings schemes. The Albanian Prime Minister earlier pledged compensation for the victims of the two failed pyramid investment funds The government is accused of using money from the funds for political ends

CHARGE Retired postal worker Desmond Douglas 65 has been charged in hospital with the murder of his wife Patricia found dead in their Belfast home. He is recovering from stab wounds MISSINGA search has been mounted for a diver missing feared drowned in a flooded quarry in Snowdonia. One of his companions was being treated in a decompression chamber near Bryn quarry. MURDERA woman of 82 has been murdered in her home in Cowdenbeath. Police said Lucy Marshall was subjected to a violent & totally unprovoked attack.

WE WON'T PAY FOR ROYAL YACHT - LABOUR

Labour has told the Queen it will not foot the £60m bill for a new Royal Yacht if it wins the General Election. Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown told the Palace on Friday the cash would not be in a Labour government's first budget. Buckingham Palace commented that the Queen regarded the new yacht as a national asset. "This is a political matter & something for the Government to address " a Palace spokesman added.
