BRITAIN WILL NOT LEAVE EUROPE SAYS PM

The Prime Minister has said that talk of Britain leaving the EU is "fatuous". He told BBC's Breakfast with Frost the "whole of the Maastricht Treaty" could not be renegotiated. Instead Britain would seek institutional reforms. "But we will not go down the route of a more centralist Europe " Mr Major said. Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown said on Sky TV that the Government's "isolationist tendancies" over Europe would cost jobs in Britain.

TOMORROW'S MAIN BUSINESS AT WESTMINSTER

The day in the Commons is devoted to private members' business. The Knives Bill & the Prisons (Alcohol Testing) Bill both receive their second readings. There will also be a backbench debate on the labelling of genetically engineered food. It will be opened by Labour MP for Lancashire West Colin Pickthall. The House of Lords is not sitting.

off the backs of parents & for adult children to be responsible for the care of their elderly parents. The results will be undetected child abuse & care for frail parents for 24 hours a day seven days a week. Social security cutbacks will mean more money for tax cuts to aid 'fat cats'. PM URGES LOYALISTS NOT TO END CEASEFIRE

John Major has issued an appeal to loyalist paramilitaries in Northern Ireland not to end their ceasefire. The Prime Minister warned they would be walking into an IRA "trap" if they returned to violence. It would give republicans the excuse they needed to escalate their own terror campaign he told BBC TV. "It is a trap it is exactly what the IRA would most wish you to do " he told the Breakfast with Frost programme.

PRESCOTT DERIDES "BOGUS" JOBLESS FIGURE

More people believe in Santa than in the Government's "bogus" unemployment figures John Prescott has claimed. The Labour Deputy Leader said the Tories had been fiddling the figures for years with thousands of jobless people being driven off the register. He added that the size of the workforce had dropped by 0.8m since 1990. But John Major welcomed the 95 000 drop in the jobless total to 1.9m as "a great Christmas present for Britain".

PRESCOTT'S POSTER BID TO UPSTAGE MAJOR

Labour has attempted to steal John Major's thunder by unveiling an election poster telling voters the Tories cannot be trusted. It shows a picture of Mr Major with the slogan: "Why trust him on the economy after 22 tax rises? Enough is enough." Labour's deputy leader John Prescott also spelled his election priorities. Schools came top along with repairing the NHS putting young people back to work & fighting crime he said.

LIB DEMS UNVEIL "101 TORY DAMNATIONS"

The Liberal Democrats have published a list of "101 Damnations" ` blunders half-truths & lies they say the Tories have committed since 1992. The dossier proved that the Government was "dishonest & disreputable" spokesman Simon Hughes told reporters. He said his party wanted to see the Tories beaten at the first opportunity. The Lib Dems wanted a chance to prove that "there is a political party which means what it says " he added.

REFORM WILL END IN TEARS SAYS MAJOR

Move to bring about constititional reform "will end in tears" the Prime Minister has warned. John Major accused Labour of wanting "to tear up the constitution" in a speech to businessmen in Yorkshire. The issue was "thoroughly damaging & a huge distraction" he said. Earlier Conservative Party chairman Dr Brian Mawhinney accused Labour & the Liberal Democrats of "lighting a fuse that would blow the UK asunder".
