A 28-year-old mother who collapsed when she saw her nine-year-old son die in a "freak accident" has also died. Christine Veitch died in the Sunderland Royal Hospital three days after swallowing her tongue when she saw her son slip & hit his head on a path. The tragedy struck when Robert Veitch was returning to his home in Pennywell after visiting his grandmother nearby. A Northumbria Police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances.

A murder inquiry is under way after a man died from injuries suffered in an attack by an armed gang at a London pub Douglas McPherson 42 was among up to 20 people gathered after hours at the London Tavern in Clapton. He was attacked on Boxing Day after four men carrying baseball & cricket bats kicked the door down & demanded somebody by name. A second man 45 suffered minor head injuries. Mr McPherson died yesterday.
