MOTHER DIES AFTER SEEING DEATH OF SON
A 28-year-old mother who collapsed when she saw her nine-year-old son die in a "freak accident" has also died. Christine Veitch died in the Sunderland Royal Hospital three days after swallowing her tongue when she saw her son slip & hit his head on a path. The tragedy struck when Robert Veitch was returning to his home in Pennywell after visiting his grandmother nearby. A Northumbria Police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances.

EIGHT DIE 130 HURT IN DUTCH CAFE FIRE
At least eight people were killed & about 30 suffered serious burns in a fire as youngsters celebrated the New Year in a cafe in The Netherlands. About 130 people were injured & it is feared the death toll could rise. Witnesses reported a large explosion possibly triggered by fireworks. Officials say all but one of the emergency exits at the cafe in Volendam had been blocked. Partygoers jumped from windows to escape.

BRITONS LANGUISHING IN FOREIGN PRISONS
More than 2 500 Britons are starting the New Year languishing in foreign jails across the world it has emerged. Many have been convicted on falsified evidence or without any real evidence at all according to the organisation Fair Trials Abroad. Four are awaiting death sentences while others are desperately ill they claim. The Foreign Office said they were liaising with the organisation in looking at a number of the cases.

Seven people have been killed after a chain bridge collapsed as a wedding party was crossing it. Twenty people from a group crossing to take the dowry to the bride's house fell into the water. Two are missing. The 64-m bridge was in Nanchong City in southwest China's Sichuan Province. FRANCE Customs have seized almost 16 tonnes of contraband cigarettes being smuggled from Turkey to Belgium. The "Regal" brand cigarettes were marked "Made in England" they said.

INDONESIA An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has shaken northern Sulawesi & parts of the Molucca Islands. There are no reports of casualties. USFormer Dutch premier Ruud Lubbers today becomes the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He replaces Sadaka Ogata who is retiring after 10 years. BANGLADESH The number of people killed when two ferries collided on the Meghna River near Chandpur has risen to 106. One ferry carrying 400 passengers sunk. Another 100 people are still missing.15th December 2000

MURDER PROBE INTO BAT ATTACK AT PUB
A murder inquiry is under way after a man died from injuries suffered in an attack by an armed gang at a London pub Douglas McPherson 42 was among up to 20 people gathered after hours at the London Tavern in Clapton. He was attacked on Boxing Day after four men carrying baseball & cricket bats kicked the door down & demanded somebody by name. A second man 45 suffered minor head injuries. Mr McPherson died yesterday.
