STEELWORKERS BALLOTED OVER JOBS FEARS

Workers at Britain's biggest steel firm are to be balloted on industrial action over fears of job losses. The Iron & Steel Trades Confederation wants assurances that planned cuts by Corus will not mean compulsory redundancies at its Scunthorpe factory. Members will be balloted but the ISTC said "real progress" had been made in day-long talks with management. Last year Corus axed thousands of jobs and the ISTC fears a plant could close.

COMEBACK FOR CHILDREN'S BOOK CHARACTERS

Two of Britain's best-loved fictional characters have been relaunched to help parents teach their children to read. Janet & John have got a new look & are starring in a new series of stories to aid four to seven-year-olds working on reading writing & maths skills. The books were popular from the 1950s until the 1970s but were criticised for being sexist & outdated. Star Kids has published 33 new titles including 24 activity books.

SADDAM SPEECH FOLLOWS "STROKE" RUMOURS

Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has delivered a televised speech appearing to contradict speculation that he may be ill. The Iraqi regime earlier denied reports that Saddam had suffered a stroke. His speech marked the 80th anniversary of Iraqi armed forces' formation. Meanwhile Britain has dismissed claims that the trade embargo on Iraq is hurting civilians saying it is up to Baghdad to get the sanctions suspended.

IRAQ ACCUSES US OF LYING OVER WAR PILOT

US claims that a fighter pilot shot down over Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War may still be alive have been rejected as "a cheap American lie" by Iraqi officials. The US Navy changed the status of pilot Michael Scott Speicher from "killed in action" to "missing in action" because of what it says is new evidence. But an Iraqi spokesman said documents proved it was "an American scandal". The US wants Iraq to reveal anything it knows about the downed pilot's fate.

THAKSIN "WINS THAI GENERAL ELECTION"

Tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra may have achieved the unprecedented feat of winning an overall majority in Thailand's parliament. His Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) Party has won 256 of the 500 seats according to early unofficial results from yesterday's general election. Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's Democrat Party is in second place with 124 seats Official vote counting is still going on in several constituencies.

KAZAKH PM RAPS "LACK OF DISCIPLINE"

The prime minister of Kazakhstan Kasymzhomart Tokayev has criticized a lack of discipline among government ministers & officials. He said many were spending too much time in the old capital Almaty often leaving the new one Astana on a Friday & not returning until Tuesday. The capital was moved in 1997 but many families of government officials still live 1500km away in Almaty. Mr Tokayev said the government was planning ways to stop the weekly exodus

BLAIR DENIES GIFT LINKED TO DOME BID

Tony Blair has dismissed as "nonsense" claims of impropriety over a donation to Labour by the chief of the group expected to buy the Millennium Dome. Legacy's Robert Bourne recently made the final instalment of a £100 000 gift Speaking on the BBC's Breakfast with Frost Mr Blair pointed out that the Legacy bid was at first turned down. He also defended a delay in revealing a #2m gift from Lord Hamlyn saying the publisher's permission had to be sought

TORY POSTERS ATTACK LABOUR TAX RECORD

William Hague has fired the first salvo in what Tories expect will be a four- month election campaign. The Tory leader has launched a poster campaign with the slogan "You've paid the tax so where's all the money gone" Tories claim Labour has increased tax but failed to improve teacher numbers railways & hospital waiting lists. Mr Hague called Tony Blair the "great pretender" for saying taxes had not risen but increasing them by stealth.

JOBS AXED AS TWO STEEL PLANTS SHUT DOWN

Almost 250 jobs are to be axed with the closure of two UK steel plants. The doomed sites at Chesterfield & Walsall operate under the name of Sterling Tubes & make seamless stainless steel tubes. The sites' owner Swedish engineering group Sandvik said the manufacturing bases would shut in August. Work would be consolidated at its larger plant in Sweden. In total 248 jobs will be lost at the plants.
