DEPORTATION THREAT TO CRIMES SUSPECTS

War crimes suspects living in the UK could be stripped of their nationality before being deported it has emerged. Home Secretary Jack Straw is examining the scope of his powers under UK immigration & nationality legislation He is said to have been influenced by the example of the US which has taken action against Nazi crimes suspects. The move comes amid claims that 1 500 members of a notorious Ukrainian pro- Nazi military unit are living in the UK

Violent crime in England & Wales rose by 8% & robbery by 21% last year Home Office crime figures show. The number of violent assaults across England & Wales was 589 688 or 11.6 per 1 000 people ` the ninth time in 10 years violent crime has increased. There were 90 465 robberies 417 538 house burglaries & 358 276 car thefts Sexual offences numbered 37 360. Overall crime was down 0.2% ` burglary fell 8% & vehicle thefts 7%.

CRIME VICTIMS GET A SAY: WALLACE'S PLAN

Victims will be allowed to have more of a say in the trials of their attackers under plans outlined by the Justice Minister Jim Wallace. Crime victims will be able to spell out the trauma they have experienced in detail in a statement to the court. Mr Wallace stressed this did not mean victims would have a say in sentencing but it would ensure that the victims' experiences were properly recognised. Mr Wallace wants to learn lessons from cases like the recent Chhokar murder.

HUNT SUPPORTERS LAUNCH PRE-VOTE VIGIL

Pro-hunt supporters have begun a vigil at Westminster in the run-up to Wednesday's Commons vote on plans to ban hunting in England & Wales. MPs will be given a free vote on three options ` to keep hunting with only voluntary controls to ban it altogether or to allow it under licence Protesters from marginal constituencies are trying to influence MPs' votes. The Middle Way group believes ministers can be persuaded to oppose a ban.

BARCLAYS INSURANCE DEAL COSTS 750 JOBS

Banking group Barclays is set to axe 750 jobs as part of an alliance with the insurance firm Legal & General. The bank has announced a deal to sell L&G products including stakeholder pensions through its branches. The move means Barclays will shed 750 staff based in its insurance division in south-east England over the next two years. It follows reports that Barclays was considering a takeover of the insurer.

DOUBTS CAST OVER MARADONA'S UK ENTRY

The Home Office has said that it has not yet received an application from the footballer Maradona to enter the UK The former Argentinian international is being lined up to play in a glamour friendly against Dundee. Reports suggest Maradona may be barred from the UK because he has a firearms conviction. The Home Office said each application is judged on its own merit. Maradona 40 is a close friend of current Dens Park forward & fellow Argentinian Claudio Canniggia.

POLICE ERROR ON ETHNIC OFFICER FIGURES

The number of black Metropolitan Police officers is lower than first thought because some white officers were classed as ethnic minorities. The force said ethnic officer numbers rose by 218 between March & September 2000 but the real increase was four. "White Irish" officers & "other white" officers from countries such as Australia were included in the figures The Home Office says it is "deeply concerned" by police statistical errors

QUAKE SURVIVORS MOVED FROM DANGER ZONES

El Salvador officials say they are trying to move earthquake survivors away from danger zones where there is a risk of after-shocks. President Flores said rescue efforts would go on but work is switching to the task of burying decomposing corpses Over 600 bodies have been found but the final toll is expected to exceed 1 000. Major roads remain blocked in places. International aid is being distributed to around 20 000 people in shelters.

DESIGNER GIVEN ROYAL WARRANT BY PRINCE

A struggling jewellery designer who set up an enamelling business with a Prince's Trust loan has been awarded a royal warrant by the Prince of Wales. Fiona Rae 34 was loaned £2 400 by the trust in 1991 & has since sold items at Liberty Paul Smith & Asprey's. The Prince has himself bought items for official & personal use. Ms Rae 34 of St Albans Herts thanked him for the "motivation & inspiration" he had given.

A Welsh couple who adopted twin baby girls sold previously to a US couple via the internet have vowed to get British citizenship for the girls. An American woman sold her babies to a Californian couple via the internet for #4 000 then snatched them back.
