BLAIR PRAISES CLINTON PEACE COMMITMENT

Tony Blair has praised Bill Clinton's "unwavering commitment" to bringing peace to Northern Ireland as the US president prepares to leave office. Mr Clinton was a "very fine president" and "a very true friend to Britain" a spokesman for the Prime Minister said. George W Bush is being inaugurated as the new US president tomorrow. Foreign Secretary Robin Cook is set to visit Washington next month to meet new US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

On his last day in office President Clinton escaped a criminal indictment in the Lewinsky scandal by agreeing to admit giving misleading testimony. He admitted he "did not fully" tell the truth in talking about Lewinsky in the Paula Jones sex harassment case in 1998 He also accepted suspension of his licence to practise law in Arkansas & was fined £15 000. In return independent counsel Robert Ray concluded the Lewinsky case

Celebrations late into the night marked the final transition of power in the US as George W Bush took over the White House from Bill Clinton. For the first time in eight years the Republicans are in charge. Just after Mr Bush been sworn in his chief of staff moved to block last minute executive orders from Mr Clinton His advisers also disclosed his first piece of legislation on education would be sent to Congress next week.

AFRICAN LEADERS DISCUSS CONGO CIVIL WAR

An emergency summit is being held in the Angolan capital Luanda to discuss the impact of last week's assassination of Congolese President Laurent Kabila. The presidents of Angola Zimbabwe & Namibia ` key allies of Kabila ` are taking part in the talks. They provided him with weaponry & thousands of troops for his war against rebels backed by Rwanda & Uganda. The stance of Congo's new President Kabila's son Joseph remains unclear.
