MINI-RESHUFFLE AFTER MANDELSON RESIGNS

Energy minister Helen Liddell is taking up her new duties as Scottish Secretary after her predecessor John Reid was appointed to the N Ireland office. Foreign Office minister Peter Hain is to replace Ms Liddell at the Department of Trade & Industry. Mr Hain will be replaced by Scottish Office minister Brian Wilson. A replacement for Mr Wilson will be announced later today Downing Street has said.

I WAS RUSHED INTO QUITTING ` MANDELSON

Peter Mandelson has said he was rushed into resigning as Northern Ireland Secretary in a moment of weakness & on the basis of incomplete evidence. Writing in The Sunday Times he claims he was left "isolated" & unable to defend himself at Downing Street. Mr Mandelson insists he did not lie about his involvement in the Hinduja brothers' passport application. He adds that he is determined to clear his name in the probe into the affair.

AHERN TO ATTEND DOWNING STREET SUMMIT

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has announced he will attend a Downing Street summit on the Northern Ireland peace process on Wednesday. He has said there is no possibility of a deal on outstanding issues such as IRA decommissioning at the meeting. But he added that he is "determined... if not optimistic" that a resolution can eventually be achieved. A breakthrough is unlikely without progress "across all fronts" he added.

REID HAS TALKS WITH N IRELAND MINISTERS

New Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid has had his first formal meeting with First Minister David Trimble & Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon. After the hour-long talks at Stormont Mr Trimble said there was "a window of opportunity" to resolve decommissioning and policing issues before an election. It would not take "much more progress" to "bed down" the peace deal he added. But Mr Mallon was less upbeat saying that "very substantial" work was needed

CAMPBELL DENIES QUERYING MANDELSON MIND

Tony Blair's spokesman has denied he questioned Peter Mandelson's state of mind following the Hinduja passport row Alastair Campbell said he called Mr Mandelson "curiously detached" over a phone call the ex-Northern Ireland Secretary made to him a week ago. Mr Campbell said he only meant Mr Mandelson did not see press coverage of the Hinduja row as "a great problem". Mr Mandelson "was is & will continue to be a friend of mine " he added.
