GERMANY QUESTIONS US "STAR WARS" PLANS

US plans for a National Missile Defence system which have drawn protests from Russia & China have now been publicly questioned by Germany. Defence Minister Rudolf Scharping told a German newspaper that it was "completely unclear" how much NMD would cost or how effective it would be. Mr Scharping said the US should consult the EU more on defence & take account of Russian anti-missile proposals. Russia opposes NMD as it goes against a 1972 treaty on limiting such systems.

15 000 FEARED DEAD IN INDIAN EARTHQUAKE

Almost 15 000 people may have died in yesterday's earthquake in the western Indian state of Gujarat Defence Minister George Fernandes has said. The marshy coastal district of Kutch around the town of Bhuj is thought to contain 13 000 of those who died. Limited communication links to Bhuj have only just been restored. In Pakistan the newspaper Dawn has reported that 15 people were killed & about 108 wounded in the quake.

BRITISH TEAM TO HELP IN QUAKE AFTERMATH

A 69-strong British rescue team has taken off for India to help in the aftermath of the earthquake. The team had been on standby at Brize Norton RAF base in Oxfordshire. It is due to land in Ahmedabad in the worst-hit region of Gujarat after an 11-hour flight. The rescuers include fire service and civil defence personnel & are taking heat-seeking equipment to detect people trapped in rubble.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN AFTER INDIA QUAKE

Regional & world leaders have been sending messages of sympathy after an earthquake in India that is thought to have killed more than 1 000 people. Chinese leaders Zhu Rongji & Li Peng sent letters to their Indian opposite numbers. And Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf said he shared their grief. China & Pakistan have had repeated disputes & confrontations with India. New US President George W Bush also said he was saddened by the quake & offered to send aid if requested.

QUAKE LEAVES OVER 450 CHILDREN TRAPPED

More than 450 children are feared trapped under the rubble of school buildings following the earthquake which hit the Indian state of Gujarat. The worst collapse was in Bhuj where around 400 children had gathered to celebrate India's Republic Day. A school in Ahmedabad where 60 children were taking a physics exam collapsed and a third school in Bachao was hit. Most schools & offices had been shut at the time because of Republic Day.

SAUDI BUS CRASH INJURES PILGRIMS

Nearly 40 pilgrims were injured some seriously when their bus hit another vehicle in Taif in Saudi Arabia. The Al-Watan newspaper said the bus had been on the way to Mecca when it swerved to avoid a car & ran into the path of another speeding vehicle. Al-Watan said pilgrims had been caught up in four other bus crashes in the past two months leaving 40 of them killed & over 100 injured.

JAPAN Heavy snow has blanketed Tokyo killing two people. Roads & railways have also been blocked & about 400 domestic flights cancelled. PORTUGAL Two people were killed & four others including a mother & her two daughters were missing after a heavy storm caused floods & mudslides in the north of the country. CHILE Former dictator General Augusto Pinochet 85 has been discharged from the Military Hospital in Santiago after suffering a slight stroke on Thursday.

NIGERIA At least 40 people were killed and several more seriously injured when a speeding bus hit a stationary truck outside the south-western city of Benin yesterday. SAUDI ARABIAAn army officer has been sentenced to 70 lashes for using a mobile phone on a domestic flight. A Saudi court said he had put lives at risk by using the phone during take-off PAKISTAN Police have arrested a nephew of exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Yusuf Abbas was detained after returning from Saudi Arabia last week.
