INDONESIA BEGINS TRIAL OVER UN MURDERS

Six men suspected of murdering three UN aid workers in West Timor have gone on trial in Indonesia. The six East Timorese have been charged in connection with a bloody rampage in Indonesian West Timor last September. The UN workers from the US Croatia and Ethiopia were stabbed to death & their bodies burnt in the street. The accused who face between 12 & 34 years in prison if convicted appeared in two courtrooms in North Jakarta.

A woman & her lover have been jailed for life for the atrocious murder of Anna Climbie ` who the Government says was "failed repeatedly" by officials. Health Secretary Alan Milburn ordered a probe into the eight-year-old's death. The Old Bailey jury returned majority murder verdicts & found Marie Therese Kouao 44 and Carl Manning 28 both of Tottenham London guilty of cruelty Anna who was Kouao's great-niece died of hypothermia & neglect.

FIRMS FINED OVER ENGINEER'S DEATH FALL

Two firms have been ordered to pay #220 000 by a court after an engineer died six hours after falling 20ft into a vat of molten metal heated to 450C. Allen Wardle 52 suffered 100% burns at a factory in Witham Essex in 1998. He had been servicing a crane used to dip objects in the vat of zinc. Factory owner South East Galvanizers of Witham and employer EA&H Sandford of Gravesend Kent admitted failing to protect him.

WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Britain will face waves of Greenham Common-style protest if the Government agrees to help the US "Star Wars" missile defence programme Labour backbencher George Galloway warned. A series of MPs criticised Corus the former British Steel whose restructuring programme is threatening jobs in the Llanwern plant in Wales. Trade & industry minister Alan Johnson said the Government's efforts to boost the plunging euro last year had failed.

TORIES CALL FOR SEPARATE MMR INJECTIONS

The Tories have said that immunisation for measles mumps & rubella should be available in separate injections. Shadow Health Secretary Dr Liam Fox told the BBC's Today programme that he believed the current MMR jab was safe. But he accused ministers of "standing by" as immunisation rates fall & said something had to be done. However Government immunisations chief David Salisbury said the gaps between separate jabs made them "less safe".

The Government said it "beggared belief" that serial killer Dr Harold Shipman got away with his crimes for such a long time. Health Secretary Alan Milburn said he was a "one-off" who had abused his position as a GP. Christine McCafferty (Lab Calder Valley) welcomed the appointment of the chairman & chief executive of the new Clinical Assessment Authority to monitor working practices among medical staff nationally.

JEALOUS MAN JAILED FOR KNIFE MURDERS

A man has been jailed for life for stabbing his former girlfriend & her male friend to death in a jealous rage. Adrian Cook 38 who pleaded guilty to two counts of murder forced his way into the Cardiff home he once shared with Rachel Kelly 25 in March 2000. Rachel & Mark Maunder 29 were stabbed dozens of times with a knife while Cook's son slept upstairs. But the "hysterical" screaming of the 20-month-old alerted neighbours.

ARMY PROBE INTO RECRUIT'S "CONVICTIONS"

The Army is investigating claims by a teenage recruit that he was allowed to sign up despite having a string of previous convictions. Private Steven O'Dea 19 claims he had 12 convictions & spent four months in Carstairs State Hospital before he joined the Royal Highland Fusiliers. The Army is trying to contact Private O'Dea from Kilmarnock who has been absent without leave since November. A newspaper claims he was jailed for hurling a brick at a rival gang member.

ABUSE MISSED DURING VISITS TO HOSPITAL

Anna Climbie who died last February after suffering horrific abuse visited two London hospitals within 10 days in July 1999. On both occasions she claimed that her injuries were self-inflicted. A doctor called the Child Protection Team but was over-ruled by a consultant paediatrician who referred Anna to social services as being "in need". ordered a statutory probe into the case

BODY-IN-THE-BOOT VICTIM NAMED BY POLICE

A murder victim whose dismembered body was found in the boot of a crashed car has been named as Ryan Hetherington. Mr Hetherington 25 whose remains were found wrapped in bags following a collision on the M62 in Cheshire came from Oldham Greater Manchester. A 46-year-old man & a woman 41 who suffered minor injuries in the crash are being held in police custody. A 33-year-old man in hospital with leg injuries is under police arrest.

MAN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO DANDO MURDER

Barry George 40 from Fulham London has formally denied murdering TV presenter Jill Dando when he appeared at a brief hearing at the Old Bailey. He answered "Yes" to his name when he appeared with three prison officers before trial judge Mr Justice Gage. When the charge that he murdered Miss Dando on 26 April 1999 was put to him he replied "Not Guilty". He is due to stand trial at the Old Bailey on February 26.

Anna Climbie to return to the home where she would die was described in court as "blindingly incompetent". Police Complaints Authority probe. A social worker has also been suspended pending disciplinary proceedings. The Old Bailey heard that at one point a social worker & a police officer refused to visit Anna's flat for fear of contracting scabies.
