EGG ON FACE IN FRANCE-TURKEY SPAT

Senior Turkish politicians threw eggs at the French embassy as part of a protest over French recognition of the Turkish "genocide" of Armenians. Anatolia news agency said the deputy leader of the BBP party had led a march to the embassy on Paris Street in Ankara and demonstrated outside. Party officials were held back from the embassy by police and left after they were stopped from throwing eggs. Turkey is now considering a draft law accusing France of genocide in Algeria.

NISSAN TO BOOST CAR PRODUCTION IN UK

A decision by Japanese car giant Nissan to build a new Micra model at its Sunderland plant will create 500 new jobs & safeguard hundreds more. The Prime Minister said it was "a great day for the North & for the country". Nissan President Carlos Ghosn said #235m would be invested in Sunderland boosting production from 330 000 cars a year to 500 000. It had earlier been feared Nissan would move some car production to France.

PENSION PROTESTS BRING FRANCE TO A HALT

Demonstrations throughout France in protest at proposals to raise the pension age to above 60 brought the country's transport system to a halt. Thousands of both private & public sector employees demanded the right to receive a pension at the age of 60 French Info radio reported. The protests affected rail air & municipal transport nationwide. Almost total paralysis was reported from Lille in the north to Marseilles on the Mediterranean coast.

BUILDER PLANS TO AXE 300 JOBS IN MERGER

Housebuilder Persimmon says it plans to make more than 300 redundancies as part of its £537.5m bid for Beazer Group. It will close 16 of the 40 regional offices that the enlarged group will have if the offer is successful. Persimmon's increased offer comes after a two-week takeover battle involving the four leading UK builders. A £535m bid for Taylor Woodrow by Bryant was launched on Monday scuppering Bryant-Beazer merger plans.

CAR WORKERS IN EUROPE-WIDE PROTEST DAY

General Motors has been hit by a Europe-wide day of protest against plans to cut 3 000 jobs & shut its Vauxhall plant at Luton. An estimated 40 000 GM workers are taking action unions say including nearly 4 000 in Frankfurt Germany. Staff at the Vauxhall plant in Luton where 2 000 jobs will go when it shuts next year failed to turn up for duty. One union official said the atmosphere was like a "graveyard".

DEAD LETTER DAY HITS DUBYA'S NEW STAFF

President George W Bush's White House staff have had the W keys of their computers removed by some outgoing members of the Clinton administration. The joke is at the expense of Mr Bush whose fondness for his middle initial has earned him the nickname "Dubya". W keys were stuck to ceilings & walls for incoming staff to find. A White House spokesman said his first reaction was "wow" but for colleagues with vandalised machines it was "oh".

ART The Royal Academy of Arts is to double in size after paying £5m for the nearby Museum of Mankind in London. The building behind the academy will house a new gallery & art schools. ISRAEL TO RETURN TO MIDDLE EAST TALKS

Israel is expected to resume Middle East peace talks with the Palestinians in the Egyptian resort of Taba. The latest round of talks comes two days after Israel halted negotiations following the killings of two civilians near the Palestinian town of Tulkarm. Ehud Barak decided to resume talks after meeting senior officials. The two sides are hoping to reach a framework peace deal before the Israeli prime ministerial poll on February 6.

MICRA PRODUCTION SECURES 10 YEARS' WORK

Production of the Nissan Micra model boosted by a £40m Government grant will begin in December 2002 and secure work in Sunderland for up to 10 years. The UK plant has been named the most productive car factory in Europe for three years running. Opened in 1986 it is the UK's largest car-maker employing 5 000 workers. Nissan suppliers employ thousands more people on Wearside & this brings in #400m a year to the local economy.
