TWO PEOPLE INJURED IN SCHOOL BUS CRASH

A driver & a teenage girl have been injured in a school bus crash. The bus collided with a car in icy road conditions at Ballyward Castlewellan in the Co Down countryside at 9.30am. A female pupil from St Malachy's High School in Castlewellan & the woman bus driver were taken to hospital. They had back head & facial injuries said not to be life-threatening. Twenty-three teenagers were assessed at the scene by paramedics & doctors.

PRINCESS BEING KEPT UNDER OBSERVATION

Princess Margaret is being kept under observation by doctors at the King Edward VII Hospital in London. The Princess 70 who was admitted yesterday is said to have been suffering from a severe appetite loss. The Queen has been "worried" by the change in her sister who may have had a second stroke last month BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond said. But she is "relieved" the Princess is getting the best possible care.

AGENDA AT WESTMINSTER

The House of Commons opens at 2.30pm with questions to the International Development Secretary followed at 3pm by Questions to the Prime Minister. The Health & Social Care Bill will be given a second reading. There will be a short debate on planning guidance on developments on flood plains: the Vale of York opened by Anne McIntosh (C Vale of York). The Lords is not sitting.

NATO CHIEF ENTERS DEPLETED URANIUM ROW

Nato is to run further checks on the health risks from the use of depleted uranium shells during the Balkans War. Secretary-General George Robertson made the announcement at a Brussels summit while stressing he was confident there was "little risk" from DU munitions. Several Western peacekeepers who served in Bosnia have since died of cancer & many have complained of illnesses. It has led to fears that the use of DU- tipped tank shells could be a factor.

NHS LAB STAFF OFFERED LARGE PAY RISES

NHS laboratory staff have been offered above-inflation pay rises to tackle staff shortages which unions claim have compromised safety. The 6 000 pathology staff are being offered rises of 3% to 13% on top of a 3.7% rise offered to other NHS staff. An Institute of Biomedical Science survey claims 88% of NHS laboratories are understaffed due to low pay. The Department of Health said the rises were aimed at improving recruitment.

LAW CHANGE MOOTED OVER ORGAN REMOVALS

Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson has said a change in the law may be necessary to ensure children's organs are never taken without permission. His comments to the BBC follow the scandals at Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital & Bristol Royal Infirmary. "Nobody denies the benefits to patients that can flow from research on human tissue " Professor Donaldson said. "What is seriously wrong is the way the NHS has dealt with the issue " he added

CAR PRICES HAVE PLUMMETED IN LAST YEAR

The average price of a new car has fallen by 12.2% during the last year with some models almost 20% cheaper than before new figures reveal. The Alliance & Leicester also finds the cost of used cars is down by 10.1%. Manufacturers lowered prices following a Competition Commission report which said the UK was paying more than Europe "People are definitely starting to take advantage of lower new car prices " an Alliance & Leicester spokesman said.

AIR PASSENGERS TO GET CHEAPER BA FARES

British Airways is to cut many of its long-haul economy & business class fares from the start of April. The move follows a change in the way it pays travel agents to sell its tickets. Subsequent savings can then be passed on to passengers the firm claims. Some long-haul economy fares could be cut by up to £110 the BBC understands. But the move means a rise in short-haul tickets of about £2. Tickets bought on BA's web site will get a £5 discount.

EXECUTIVE MULLS OVER NAME CHANGE

The Scottish Executive is on the hunt for a new name which would do more to convey the scope of its work. Ministers are inviting suggestions on a new title to replace the name which has been in use since devolution. The Executive inherited most of the staff & responsibilities of the old Scottish Office. The idea of renaming the Executive emerged as the Post Office revealed plans to change its corporate name in March to Consignia.

BAE EXPECTS "SIZEABLE UK REDUNDANCIES"

Aerospace firm BAE Systems says it plans "sizeable redundancies" in its UK workforce in the defence area. It said staff were likely to be cut because orders for Hawk trainers & MoD business were lower than expected. Unions fear 2 000 jobs could go with works at Brough near Hull & Woodford Greater Manchester hardest hit. The firm said it hoped cuts could be achieved through voluntary redundancy and transfers to other divisions.

LISTEN TO TUBE SAFETY FEARS SAYS MAYOR

London Mayor Ken Livingstone says union fears about safety if the Tube is part- privatised must be taken seriously. Addressing a meeting organised by the three main rail unions Mr Livingstone said privatisation of the national rail network had helped undermine safety. He said London Underground must avoid such a fate under the Government's plan for a public/private partnership. But Tube boss Derek Smith labelled the mayor's safety remarks "irresponsible".

SPAIN

Many abattoir staff in central and northwest Spain have gone on strike to protest against measures introduced to counter the BSE crisis. The workers in the Castilla y Leon are unhappy at the requirement of health certificates for cattle. PORTUGAL Train drivers began a 48-hour strike on Monday to protest against working conditions. Portuguese Rail (CP) is to provide alternative transport to minimize the effects of the strike & is making a total of 206 buses available.

ILLEGALS MARCH FOR RIGHTS IN SPAIN

Over 1000 immigrants have been marching to the capital of the south-eastern region of Murcia demanding measures to legalise their presence in the country. The immigrants mostly from Ecuador began their march in Lorca 70 km away. Twelve Ecuadorans were killed there last week when a train hit a van taking them to work on local farms. Employers there are now said to have stopped taking on workers without official documents for fear of being fined by the authorities.
