Brown praises under-fire Prescott

Chancellor Gordon Brown has defended Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott amid growing pressure about his affair. Campaigning for the elections in west London Mr Brown praised his Cabinet colleague as a huge figure in bringing the Labour movement together. Mr Prescott has voiced regret over his affair with one of his secretaries. Tony Blair says it is a private matter. But some Tory MPs are asking about reports that Mr Prescott took Tracey Temple to his official residence.

Ps prepare to reopen loans probe

A committee of MPs is preparing to resume its inquiry into the "cash for peerages" allegations. The Public Administration Committee will decide whether to resume its probe once it knows if there is a realistic chance of police bringing charges. The committee is to meet police & prosecutors on 15 May for more talks. Tony Blair's chief fundraiser Lord Levy is among those likely to be called to give evidence later this month. All involved deny wrong-doing.

The home secretary must update the House of Commons on the hunt for 1 023 foreign criminals released without being deported the Conservatives say. Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said he wanted an "urgent statement" on how many had been arrested & sent home. Charles Clarke has faced calls for his resignation but told a local newspaper he hoped to continue in his job. It emerged he took three weeks to tell the prime minister the criminals including murderers had been freed.

Ps attack private hospital deal

A private sector consortium contracted to build an NHS hospital has been branded the "unacceptable face of capitalism" by a key Commons committee. MPs on the public accounts committee say Octagon used a refinancing deal on the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital project to boost investors' returns. The hospital trust was left with risks of a liability of up to £257m if it needed to terminate the contract early. Committee chairman Edward Leigh said taxpayers' money had been put at risk.

Britain 'needs compulsory voting'

Britons should be forced to vote in elections a think-tank has said. Think-tank The Institute for Public Policy Research's report suggests those who do not vote should be fined to combat low turnout at the polls. The research comes just days before local elections in England where turnout is expected to be low. Several Cabinet ministers support the move but the Conservatives have warned that compulsion could be used as a government "cash cow".

Many foreign criminals still free

Almost half of the 79 serious foreign criminals who were freed without being considered for deportation are still unaccounted for the government says. Home Secretary Charles Clarke told MPs 38 of the 79 who include rapists & murderers had not been tracked down. Mr Clarke added the "clear presumption" should be that immigrants will be deported on release unless "special circumstances" dictate they cannot be. The Conservatives accused ministers of "losing control of their departments".
