US crash sparks Afghanistan riot

At least seven people have been killed in the Afghan capital Kabul after a traffic accident involving a US military convoy sparked mass rioting. Hundreds of anti-US protesters clashed with Afghan security forces for two hours in one of the worst riots since the fall of the Taleban in late 2001. The protesters moved on to attack buildings in the diplomatic quarter. There are conflicting reports over whether the US troops in the military convoy fired into the crowd.

Aid workers killed in Afghanistan

Three women & a man working for the ActionAid charity have been shot dead in Afghanistan officials say. The aid workers - all believed to be Afghan citizens - were killed in Mingajik district in the northern province of Jowzjan. They were reportedly attacked in their vehicle by gunmen riding motorcycles. Aid teams are often targeted in attacks blamed on the Taleban militia - but incidents such as these are relatively rare in Afghanistan's calmer north.

Nine dead in Iraqi bus explosion

At least nine people have been killed in an explosion on or near a bus north- east of the Iraqi capital Baghdad police say. There were conflicting reports as to where the explosion which police said was caused by a bomb took place. News agencies quoted police as saying the blast happened in the region of Baquba & Khalis. Iraqi insurgents have carried out almost daily attacks for months aimed at civilians & security forces.

The parents of Lt Mildinhall from Battersea south London have paid tribute to their "beautiful talented and loving son". Two British TV journalists were killed by a car bomb in Baghdad on Monday.

Stage set for Eurovision showdown

Swedish pop star Carola is favourite to triumph at this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Athens - 15 years after she first won the competition. Carola who entered the contest in 1983 and won in 1991 is the bookmakers' favourite closely followed by Anna Vissi the entry for hosts Greece. Romania Finland Russia & Bosnia & Herzegovina are among the other tips. The UK's Daz Sampson who will sing his rap song Teenage Life is also believed to have a realistic chance. Bosnian suspect sent to The Hague

A Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect has been transferred to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia after 10 years on the run. Dragan Zelenovic was flown from Bosnia to the Hague after being expelled from Russia where he was arrested last year. A former military policeman he is wanted for the alleged rape & torture of Muslim women in the town of Foca during the war in the early 1990s. He is expected to appear before a judge at the UN court in the next few days.

Glasgow film scoops Cannes award

A film shot & produced in Glasgow has won the special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Red Road which cost just over £1m to make is about a CCTV operator who sees the city through the security cameras. The film a debut for British director Andrea Arnold received its gala premiere on Saturday & was also nominated for the Palme d'Or prize. She said: "Just to have a film screened here is amazing but I'm delighted to come back a week later with a prize."

Four Britons die in Iraq attacks

Two Britons working for a US TV network have been killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq hours after two British soldiers died in a similar attack. Paul Douglas 48 and James Brolan 42 died in Baghdad when the US military unit they were based with was attacked. On Sunday two members of the Queen's Dragoon Guards were killed in Basra and two others were injured also by a roadside bomb. Nine UK service personnel have now been killed in Iraq this month.

Rain compounds Java quake misery

Survivors of an earthquake that killed at least 4 900 people on Indonesia's island of Java have spent a second night outdoors. Driving rain has forced some to return to the rubble of their homes. Many bodies are still thought to be trapped under debris & rescuers say the odds of finding survivors are slim. An aid operation is gathering speed in the worst-hit areas around Yogyakarta where 20 000 people are said to have been hurt & 200 000 left homeless.

East Timor leader calls for calm

East Timor's President Xanana Gusmao has appealed for calm to end rampant mob violence in the fledgling country. "Stop this fighting that is dividing us " Mr Gusmao told crowds outside the presidential palace where he held crisis talks with the Cabinet. Among the crowds were protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri who is blamed by many East Timorese for the unrest. Australia says troops it sent last week had had an immediate effect.

Convictions too few - Goldsmith

Conviction rates for serious offences such as wounding & rape are too low the Attorney General has admitted. Lord Goldsmith said victims had a right to be worried but the government was working to tackle the problem & more offenders were being taken to court. He was responding to an Observer study which claimed convictions for crimes such as rape & wounding had fallen below 10% since Labour came to power. The Tories said it showed ministers were losing control of violent crime.

UK groups consider quake strategy

UK aid agencies are considering a joint fund-raising appeal for victims of the Indonesian earthquake as relief teams arrive in the region. The Disasters Emergency Committee which represents 13 UK agencies said a decision would be made within two days. International Development Secretary Hilary Benn has pledged £1m in aid to the Red Cross on top of £3m already promised to the UN effort. More than 4 500 people were killed & thousands hurt by Saturday's quake.

At least 1 000 UK soldiers desert

More than 1 000 members of the British military have deserted the armed forces since the start of the 2003 Iraq war the BBC has discovered. It comes as Parliament debates a law that will forbid military personnel from refusing to participate in the occupation of a foreign country. Some 900 have evaded capture since the Iraq war started official figures say. But the Ministry of Defence says the numbers going missing from the army have stayed constant in recent years.

Milosevic not poisoned UN finds

There is no evidence to suggest that former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was poisoned according to a United Nations investigation. The Hague tribunal's report said he died of a heart attack - despite claims "in some segments of the media that he was the victim of murder". Mr Milosevic died in his cell on 11 March while on trial for war crimes. The report said security breaches did allow him to self-medicate but said he had received "proper care".
