A committee of MPs is preparing to resume its inquiry into the "cash for peerages" allegations. The Public Administration Committee will decide whether to resume its probe once it knows if there is a realistic chance of police bringing charges. The committee is to meet police & prosecutors on 15 May for more talks. Tony Blair's chief fundraiser Lord Levy is among those likely to be called to give evidence later this month. All involved deny wrong-doing.
Tony Blair has sought to brush off suggestions he has "lost control" by telling MPs he plans to toughen the laws on deporting foreign criminals. Mr Blair also claimed the freeing of 1 023 foreign prisoners without them being considered for deportation was the result of failings over "decades". But Tory leader David Cameron called that explanation "pathetic". Hundreds of the freed prisoners including 38 serious offenders have yet to be tracked down.
A man suspected over the killing of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky was considered for deportation just months before the mother-of-three was shot. But the decision was taken not to send Mustaf Jamma back to war-torn Somalia because of the dangers he faced there. Shadow home secretary David Davis said the case raised more questions in the row over foreign convicts' deportation. Home Secretary Charles Clarke is due to update MPs on efforts to trace inmates who were freed & not deported.
Judges in England & Wales are expected to get revised guidance on when they should recommend that foreign criminals ought to be deported. The Sentencing Guidelines Council was sent a report on the topic a year ago. Since then the Home Office has admitted that it did not act on judicial recommendations that many foreign criminals should be deported. More than 1 000 foreign criminals were freed from prisons including 160 recommended for removal by the courts.

Almost half of the 79 serious foreign criminals who were freed without being considered for deportation are still unaccounted for the government says. Home Secretary Charles Clarke told MPs 38 of the 79 who include rapists & murderers had not been tracked down. Mr Clarke added the "clear presumption" should be that immigrants will be deported on release unless "special circumstances" dictate they cannot be. The Conservatives accused ministers of "losing control of their departments".
A woman whose son was murdered by a Jamaican drug dealer has called on Home Secretary Charles Clarke to resign. Donovan Gayle was stabbed to death in a frenzied attack in Lozells Birmingham in April 2005 by Mark Wright 24 who had been convicted of drug dealing. Mr Gayle's mother Dorothy said her son's killer should have been deported because he had served time in prison. The Home Office said it was investigating the case to see if Wright was recommended for deportation.

Political parties are making a last dash for votes on the final day of campaigning for the local elections. As Labour's troubles continue ahead of the polls in England Tony Blair faced pressure at prime minister's questions. Conservative leader David Cameron & Lib Dem Sir Menzies Campbell are calling for the home secretary to quit over the release of foreign prisoners. Defence Secretary John Reid said voters would weigh up the recent "lurid headlines" against Labour's record.

A new £3.5m purpose-built storytelling centre hailed as the first of its kind in the world has opened its doors. The unveiling of the Scottish Storytelling Centre on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh marks the end of a five- year long project. As the capital's literary quarter the strip already boasts the Scottish Poetry Library the Writer's Museum & the offices of the Saltire Society. The modern complex replaces the old Netherbow Arts Centre.

Ministers are planning to ban Scottish schools from serving junk food & drinks at any time of day. Education Minister Peter Peacock said the proposals would make nutritional standards statutory. The Scottish Executive is inviting feedback on the proposed new law under which councils would have to encourage more pupils to eat school meals. The minister said councils may also be given new powers to provide free snacks to children during the school day.
