Israel MPs approve Olmert cabinet

Israel's new government has been sworn in after parliament approved a cabinet list proposed by the incoming prime minister Ehud Olmert. Earlier the Mr Olmert vowed to fix the country's future borders assuring MPs that major changes were on the way. His plan involves withdrawal from some parts of the occupied West Bank with or without a deal with Palestinians. The Israeli leader has refused to hold talks with the Palestinians since militant group Hamas won elections.

Annan presses Sudan on UN force

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on the Sudanese government to allow a UN assessment team into the war-torn region of Darfur. He said the international community needed to move rapidly "to have the right impact on the ground". Top UN humanitarian official Jan Egeland has flown to Sudan & will visit Darfur on Sunday. His visit comes a day after Khartoum and the largest rebel group in Darfur signed a peace deal.

Blair has lost authority - Tories

The Cabinet reshuffle shows the government has lost its authority & is in "terminal decline" Conservative leader David Cameron has said. As some Labour backbenchers urged Tony Blair to name his departure date Mr Cameron said MPs were plotting rather than thinking about policy. Mr Blair has held talks this weekend with his likely successor Gordon Brown about Labour's future. Mr Brown has again called for the urgent renewal of the Labour Party.

Air traffic simulator introduced

Air traffic control staff will use a #1.5m simulator to train to use a £50m control tower at Heathrow. More than 50 controllers with the National Air Traffic Services will use the 300ft tower from the winter. It replaces one used since 1955. NATS provides air traffic control at 15 of the UK's biggest airports. The virtual reality machine replicates the view equipment & layout of the new control tower & gives day & night & weather effects.

Cruise ship in port after blaze

A cruise ship carrying 708 people has been towed to Southampton after an engine fire sparked a major alert in the English Channel. Crew members brought the fire under control later assisted by East Sussex firefighters as part of a new national offshore fire & rescue service. The Calypso was about 20 miles south- west of Beachy Head at the time. Alhthough passengers & crew boarded lifeboats no evacuation was carried out & there were no casualties.

Darfur rebels 'agree peace deal'

The largest rebel group in Sudan's Darfur region has agreed to sign a peace deal with the government. The breakthrough came when SLM leader Minni Minnawi returned to the talks following a late-night session. However two smaller groups rejected the deal following last-minute efforts to secure their support. The government has also agreed to sign. International negotiators say the deal is the best hope for peace in Darfur where 2m people have fled their homes.

UN Darfur force 'vital' for peace

The UN's top humanitarian official has said it is vital that UN peacekeepers are allowed into Sudan's Darfur region to help end the humanitarian crisis. Speaking from Darfur Mr Egeland told the BBC there was a sea of militias in the region & without security the humanitarian work could not succeed. Mr Egeland is in Darfur in western Sudan to assess conditions there & in refugee camps in neighbouring Chad. An agreement between the government & a key rebel group was signed on Friday.
