Call for debate on public health

Experts are calling for a debate about what restrictions & measures should be taken to protect public health. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics has launched a four-month consultation on the ethical issues which would be thrown up by a more robust approach. Senior scientists heading the project said there were contradictions in the government's tough stance on smoking and liberal approach to alcohol. Compulsory vaccination & restricting access to care will also be considered.

Plans to help less well-off families before they develop major social problems have been outlined by a government minister. New social exclusion minister Hilary Armstrong said one million people were cut off from society in the UK with three million more at risk. She stressed the importance of preventing problems. "We need to concentrate much more on prevention instead of picking up the pieces of damaged lives " she said.

Iraqi parliament approves Cabinet

Iraq's parliament has approved a new government including members of the main Shia Kurd & Sunni parties. However three crucial ministries - national security interior & defence - have still not been agreed. In a keynote speech PM Nouri Maliki said Iraqis must "denounce terrorism" and find an "objective timetable" for international forces to leave. It is hoped the 37-minister team the first full-term government since the 2003 invasion can curb Iraq's unrest.

Lib Dems plan a £2 000 road tax

The owners of cars which generate the most pollution would face annual road taxes of £2 000 under Liberal Democrat plans to tackle climate change. The figure - 10 times the current rate - would cover high-end cars such as BMW's 7 series Bentley Continentals but also some people carriers. It would apply only to new cars with exemptions for "essential" vehicles. Airlines would also be taxed per flight rather than by passenger to penalise companies operating half-full planes.

Amnesty call over illegal workers

The possibility of an amnesty for illegal workers in Britain should be debated a key union figure has said. Jack Dromey Deputy General of the Transport & General Workers Union estimated there could be 500 000 people working in the UK without permission. Mr Dromey said these immigrants "lived in fear" of being found & were exploited by their employers. He also said that it would not be possible to deport this number of people from Britain.

Officers discover sex-slave cult

A sex slavery cult based on a series of 1960s science fiction novels has been uncovered by police in Darlington. Durham Police discovered the bizarre sect after raiding a home in the area after receiving complaints that a woman was being held against her will. But a spokesman said the Canadian was a willing participant & the other people involved were consenting adults. The group called Kaotians follow the Chronicles of Gor novels which depict a society where women are dominated.

If you enter the date, say 12th May 1998, into the Google search engine above you will be able to select the pages which have notes of the news on that day. You can then use the Note Navigation Bar to scroll through all the data for that day.
