There will be other candidates to challenge Chancellor Gordon Brown for the prime minister's job a former Labour minister has said. MP Frank Field said he believed Home Secretary John Reid would "certainly" be among those to challenge for a job widely expected to become Mr Brown's. Tony Blair says his successor will have time to prepare for the next election. Mr Field told the BBC Mr Brown "does not want to take over a government & a party which is just rubble".
Northern Ireland's politicians have taken their seats in the Stormont assembly for the first time since October 2002. There is no immediate prospect of a power-sharing executive being formed. However the government hopes recalling the politicians will help to pave the way towards a deal in the autumn by its deadline of 24 November. The 108 assembly members observed a minute's silence for Ballymena teenager Michael McIlveen who was murdered.
The government is to review whether "core British values" should become a compulsory part of the curriculum for 11 to 16-year-olds in England. In response to last year's London bombings ministers want to adapt the current citizenship classes in an attempt to make society more unified. Education minister Bill Rammell criticised "narrow & unhelpful" interpretations of Islam. He ordered an urgent review of university Islamic courses.
A 15-year-old boy is due in court on Monday charged with the murder of Ballymena teenager Michael McIlveen. A 16-year-old boy is also expected to appear at the same hearing in Coleraine Magistrates' Court charged with affray. Five teenagers are already in custody charged with the murder of the 15-year- old St Patrick's College pupil in Ballymena last Sunday. In a bid to glean more information police on Saturday went back to the car park where Michael was attacked.

An off-duty special constable may have been murdered with a kitchen knife she carried while investigating a noise outside her home police have said. Nisha Patel-Nasri 29 bled to death after being stabbed in the leg in Wembley north-west London on Thursday night. The weapon has not been found. Officers said they still wanted to talk to a couple seen in the area. They also want to trace a man seen heading towards East Lane who did not look back despite the victim's screams.
Progressive Unionist Party leader David Ervine is expected to join the Ulster Unionist group at the Northern Ireland Assembly. It is understood an official approach was made to him on Friday ahead of the assembly being recalled on Monday. The PUP executive has held talks & Mr Ervine will remain its leader. However the calculated political move could mean the UUP receive an extra ministerial post at the expense of Sinn Fein if a government is formed.
