No-one has the intention to take military action against Iran new UK Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has said after talks at the UN in New York. But she refused to repeat her predecessor Jack Straw's insistence that such action was "inconceivable". It comes as foreign ministers from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council & Germany discussed a response to Iran's nuclear programme. Mrs Beckett said the possible wording of a UN resolution was not debated.

Two men who set fire to a house killing a boy in a botched revenge attack have been found guilty of murder. Dean Pike 11 was killed & his pregnant mother Janine Dodd 30 was seriously injured in the blaze at their home in Hendon Sunderland last June. On Wednesday Terry Majinusz 41 and Neil English 42 from Sunderland were found guilty of murder & causing grievous bodily harm with intent. A third man Trevor Gordon 21 from Sunderland was cleared of all charges.
Thirteen children have been killed in eastern Nepal after the three-wheel bus taking them to school crashed into a canal police say. At least 21 children were on the bus most of them under 10 years of age. Seven children have been rescued. At least one child is still missing. The cause of the accident in the district of Sunsari is not clear. Bus crashes are common in Nepal. In November 25 people were killed in a crash in the west of the country.

The market dominance of UK supermarket giants Tesco Asda Sainsbury's & Morrisons is to be investigated for the third time in seven years. The stores control almost 75% of the #120bn UK grocery market & the Office of Fair Trading wants the Competition Commission to take a look. The UK fertility watchdog has approved the extension of embryo gene screening to cover a wider range of diseases. IVF clinics will be able to offer tests to couples with a family history of breast cancer ovarian cancer & a type of colon cancer.
