Tory leader David Cameron says the "crisis" in the criminal justice system and health service is a symptom of a government "that has been paralysed". In rowdy Commons exchanges he asked Tony Blair to say why he "does not trust" Chancellor Gordon Brown to take over from him now as prime minister. "Isn't it becoming increasingly clear that you should go & go soon?" Mr Blair said he would not debate his departure with him joking there were "enough lining up to do that already".
A deal on pensions has been agreed between Tony Blair & Gordon Brown following months of wrangling the prime minister has confirmed. Under the agreement the link between the state pension & earnings will be restored - probably in 2012. There is understood to be a deal on raising the state pension age to 68 by 2050. More details are being discussed. The Lib Dems welcomed the deal as a "step forward" but warned it would not spell the end of means-testing.
There will be other candidates to challenge Chancellor Gordon Brown for the prime minister's job a former Labour minister has said. MP Frank Field said he believed Home Secretary John Reid would "certainly" be among those to challenge for a job widely expected to become Mr Brown's. Tony Blair says his successor will have time to prepare for the next election. Mr Field told the BBC Mr Brown "does not want to take over a government & a party which is just rubble".
The government has said it will appeal against a decision to allow nine Afghan hijackers to stay in Britain because it was unsafe for them to return home. Home Secretary John Reid said it was important to challenge any ruling which may "appear inexplicable or bizarre to the general public". A High Court judge ruled the nine involved in a four-day stand-off at Stansted Airport in 2000 could remain. Prime Minister Tony Blair had said the ruling was an "abuse of common sense".

Former Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has appeared in court in the capital Suva on charges of inciting a mutiny in November 2000. Prosecutors say he had urged soldiers to take part in an attempt to oust the commander of the armed forces. Mr Rabuka denies the charges. He led two coups in 1987 & was later prime minister of a democratically elected government from 1992 to 1999. The court appearance comes as Fiji nears the end of a week-long election.

The group of Afghan hijackers granted permission by the High Court to stay in the UK say they are educated people who do not want to "sponge" off the state. In a statement the nine asylum seekers said they were desperate to be allowed to work & contribute to UK society. They also apologised to passengers on the flight they hijacked to Stansted in 2000 for the fear they had caused. Tony Blair has said the decision not to return the men to Afghanistan is "an abuse of common sense".
