A company which provides staff to clean government buildings launched a probe after it sent five illegal immigrants to work in a Home Office premises. The Nigerians were arrested in London after being sent to the Immigration & Nationality Directorate's Becket House. Earlier this week a director at the IND caused a row after saying he did not have the "faintest idea" how many illegal immigrants were in the UK. Techclean said the five men appeared to have "circumvented" safeguards.

Victims of the 7 July London bombings are to receive increased compensation after criticism about the amounts being offered. The Home Office said an extra £2.5m would be available due to the "exceptional nature" of the attacks. The additional compensation which could double some victim's payments will be distributed before the first anniversay of the bombings. Details of how the money will be awarded will be announced next week.

The chemist chain Boots will donate #3.6m to North Lanarkshire following the closure of its Airdrie factory. A new regeneration company involving the council & local economic development bodies will be established with the cash. Iraq's new Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has vowed that he will use "maximum force" against terrorism while also promoting national reconciliation.
