US 'winding up' Iraq deaths probe

An investigation into claims that US marines may have deliberately killed civilians in Iraq is nearing its end the Pentagon says. Official accounts from the Iraqi city of Haditha in November said 15 people were killed by a bomb & firefight. But reports in the US press say as many as 24 people may have died and that murder charges may be in preparation. Moves are being made to prepare the public perhaps for something shocking says a BBC correspondent in Washington.

Prescott's future is questioned

Pressure is mounting on John Prescott as his position as deputy prime minister is called into question by Labour politicians. Labour peer Baroness Kennedy told the BBC it was "timely" for Mr Prescott to leave his post. Former minister Denis MacShane said the party needed renewing from bottom to top & that no-one's job was safe. But a report in the Sunday Times of an organised plot to unseat Mr Prescott has been dismissed by backbenchers.

UK offers aid for Java earthquake

Britain has offered immediate aid to Indonesia after a huge earthquake killed thousands on the island of Java. More than 3 000 people have been killed and thousands more injured by a strong earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Java officials have said. The UK is standing by to help with search & rescue teams & officials to help co-ordinate relief efforts. Foreign Office minister Kim Howells said so far there have been no reports of British casualties in the region.

Blair heads to US for Bush talks

UK leader Tony Blair is heading to Washington to meet US President George W Bush with Iraq & Iran expected to dominate the agenda. Mr Blair will urge the international community as a whole to support Iraq's new government his spokesman said. A new package to persuade Iran to curb nuclear work will also be a key issue. Both leaders have seen their popularity drop & will be keen to ensure a positive legacy as their terms draw to a close correspondents say.

UN pulls staff from E Timor chaos

The UN has ordered all non-essential staff out of East Timor which has been hit by a fresh outburst of violence. Militias armed with guns & machetes have rampaged though the capital Dili torching houses & vehicles. Hundreds of people ran screaming from their homes seeking shelter in churches as Australian troops in tanks tried to restore order. Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri said the country was facing a coup attempt but did not know who was behind it.

Israel in Lebanon border 'truce'

The UN has brokered a new truce along Israel's border with Lebanon after a series of skirmishes. The UN said it hoped "sporadic" firing along the border would soon subside. Israeli jets earlier targeted guerrilla bases in Lebanon reportedly killing two militants in response to rocket attacks on northern Israeli bases. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said militants in Lebanon "will receive a clear & harsh response with no hesitation if they do not stop".

Blair urges United Nations reform

Tony Blair has called for the reform of the United Nations in a key foreign policy speech in the US. He said the UN secretary general should be given greater powers to improve the organisation's ability to react to international crises. Other institutions such as the World Bank & International Monetary Fund also needed to change he added in his speech at Georgetown University. A spokesman for Kofi Annan said the UN chief welcomed Mr Blair's proposals.

MP attacks Labour's Blair critics

Labour MP Ann Clwyd has attacked fellow party members who "continually snipe" at its leadership. Speaking from Baghdad Tony Blair's special envoy to Iraq added speculation about his departure from Downing Street had given people abroad the wrong idea. "A small number of individuals are giving the idea there is a big rift in the Labour party " she told BBC News. If members wanted Labour's "very strong programme" to succeed they should unite to give it every support she added.
