Clarke under fire in deportee row

The Conservatives have again called for Home Secretary Charles Clarke to be sacked saying "enough is enough" in the hunt for missing foreign criminals. Shadow Commons leader Theresa May asked if the arrest of a recommended deportee over a sex assault could be "sufficient reason" for Mr Clarke to be sacked. Labour's Geoff Hoon rebuffed the call accusing Mrs May of "blustering". The Lib Dems say Mr Clarke's pledge to consider deportation for all foreign criminals would make little difference.

Apology call over peerage claim

Labour is demanding Plaid Cymru apologises after it accused Peter Hain of offering the MP Peter Law a peerage not to fight the last election. Elfyn Llwyd MP made the allegation in the Commons but it later emerged that Mr Law himself had denied ever being offered a peerage in a TV interview. Mr Hain the Welsh Secretary denied the allegation saying it was a "preposterous lie". But Mr Llwyd insists that Mr Law did tell him a peerage offer had been made.

Teenager admits killing schoolboy

A 14-year-old boy has admitted killing 11-year-old Joe Geeling who was found stabbed to death near his home. Police launched a massive search for the youngster who suffered from cystic fibrosis after he failed to return from school. But his body was discovered in Whitehead Park Bury on 2 March. The teenager who appeared at Manchester Crown Court did not enter a plea but prosecution & defence teams said he admitted killing Joe.

New PM elected in Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands opposition leader Manasseh Sogavare has been chosen as the nation's new prime minister. The original choice Snyder Rini resigned last week after his election sparked riots in the capital Honiara. Mr Sogavare who also served as prime minister between 2000 & 2001 pledged to end corruption. Hundreds of foreign troops & police are in the Solomons having been deployed when the anti-Rini protesters began damaging property & businesses.

Rivals criticise Cabinet changes

Conservative leader David Cameron welcomed Charles Clarke's departure from the Cabinet but labelled Tony Blair's reshuffle as "desperate stuff". Mr Cameron celebrating his party's council election success said: "What the country needs is not a reshuffle but a replacement to the government." Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell said it showed the PM did not plan to hand over power to Gordon Brown soon. He added the PM was "trying to shuffle a pretty battered pack of cards".

Straw urges new effort on Darfur

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has urged the international community to redouble efforts to prevent the slaughter of innocent people in Darfur Sudan. Mr Straw said "full use of sanctions and the arms embargo" was needed to put pressure on the Sudanese government. He told an audience in London the next couple of months were crucial as the situation appeared to be worsening. The Sudan government & pro-government Arab militias are accused of crimes against the black African population.

Cameron: Prescott looks a 'fool'

John Prescott "clearly looks a fool" over his admission of an affair with his diary secretary & has a "woeful record" in office David Cameron says. The Conservative leader says an inquiry should be held if it is established that the deputy prime minister has broken the ministerial code. Labour MP Stephen Pound has urged Mr Prescott to "consider his position". Mr Prescott is meeting Tony Blair on Tuesday afternoon but No 10 says the talks are only "routine".

Clarke: I don't agree with Blair

Charles Clarke has said he does "not agree" with Tony Blair's decision to sack him as home secretary. Mr Clarke told the BBC he could have "carried through" the reforms needed to the Home Office following the furore over foreign criminals in the UK. He said he had been offered "serious" alternative jobs within government by Mr Blair but had turned them down. The prime minister had to make "hard judgements" Mr Clarke said adding that he remained a supporter.

Blair gives upbeat poll message

Tony Blair says Labour's record not the latest newspaper headlines should decide the local elections in England. Election experts predict Labour could be badly damaged by the foreign prisoners controversy & news of John Prescott's affair with a secretary. But Mr Blair told a union conference in Blackpool: "It has been difficult but nine days' headlines should not obscure nine years of achievements." Government amends law change bill

The government is to back down over a bill which would have given ministers the power to alter legislation without the approval of Parliament. The amendments are in response to criticism by MPs from all parties & from civil liberties groups. They claimed the regulatory reform bill would enable ministers to re-write a range of laws. Cabinet Office Minister Jim Murphy said the changes meant the law could only be used to cut unnecessary red tape.

Tories are 'satisfied' with gains

Conservatives have said the party's local election gains are "at the top end" of expectations. With net gains of more than 270 seats the Tories won control of councils such as Crawley Ealing & Croydon. On the projected share of the votes if the local polls were held nationwide the Conservatives are on 40% ahead of the Lib Dems' 27% & Labour's 26%. Tory chairman Francis Maude called it a "good" result. But opponents said Tories had failed in northern cities.
