NHS staff pile pressure on Hewitt

Midwives & physiotherapists have urged ministers to tackle NHS funding issues & "rebuild trust" with staff. The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) & the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) were surveyed ahead of the RCM's annual conference this week. Members were concerned about shrinking maternity budgets recruitment freezes and staff cuts plus increased waiting times for physiotherapy treatment. The findings will be given to Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt on Wednesday.

Buncefield tank 'was overflowing'

A storage tank at the Buncefield oil depot was overflowing for more than 40 minutes before it exploded causing a 32-hour inferno a report has said. Fuel was piped into the tank for 11 hours before the blasts on 11 December. The Health & Safety Executive said that at 0520 GMT the tank was full but gauges & safety devices did not work and 41 minutes later the tank exploded. Some families were left homeless & 43 people were injured in the blasts in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire.

Hospital bars foetus photos man

A 75-year-old man has been denied hip treatment after health officials warned him about sending hospital staff pictures of aborted foetuses. Anti-abortion supporter Edward Atkinson has been jailed for 28 days for sending offensive photos to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn Norfolk. The hospital said Atkinson had been banned from treatment for anything other than life-threatening conditions. An anti-abortion group backing Atkinson said the decision was "outrageous".

All-women list apology rejected

A Labour apology for imposing an all- women shortlist in Blaenau Gwent at the 2005 election has been rejected by the late MP Peter Law's former agent. Welsh Secretary Peter Hain said while an all-woman list was an honourable objective Labour "got it wrong". But Dai Davies who is now spokesman for the People's Voice group said it was "too little too late". Mr Law who died last month after a brain tumour stood as an independent winning Labour's safest Welsh seat.

Blair 'to hold talks over exit'

Tony Blair is going to talk to senior colleagues about the details of the "stable & orderly" transfer of power Chancellor Gordon Brown has said. But Mr Brown widely tipped as the next prime minister told GMTV Mr Blair had not yet discussed timings with him. The government had to prove by "actions and behaviour" that it was capable of winning people's trust he said. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott also warned Labour MPs "not to get into a war about" the party's future now.

If you enter the date, say 12th May 1998, into the Google search engine above you will be able to select the pages which have notes of the news on that day. You can then use the Note Navigation Bar to scroll through all the data for that day.


You can move to the next day or to the previous day by using the Date Navigation Bar.
