Tony Blair says Labour's record not the latest newspaper headlines should decide the local elections in England. Election experts predict Labour could be badly damaged by the foreign prisoners controversy & news of John Prescott's affair with a secretary. But Mr Blair told a union conference in Blackpool: "It has been difficult but nine days' headlines should not obscure nine years of achievements." He told voters to focus on how schools the NHS & policing had improved.
Early signs suggest turnout will be above average in the local elections in England as voters stream to polling stations in bright sunshine. Some 144 English authorities & all 32 of London's boroughs are holding votes as 4 360 council seats are contested. Thirty-six metropolitan authorities & 20 unitary authorities are electing a third of their council members while 88 districts are also holding polls. Watford Hackney Newham & Lewisham are holding mayoral elections.
A couple from Leicester have been given permission by the fertility watchdog to have a "saviour sibling" in a bid to help their sick 20-month-old daughter. Charlotte Mariethoz has the rare blood condition diamond blackfan anaemia & doctors say she needs a stem cell transplant from a genetic match. Her parents will now use IVF to try to have a "designer baby" to save her. In 2004 a British boy with the same disorder was saved by cells from a baby brother born after embryo selection.

The chairman of the mosque where 9/11 plotter Zacarias Moussaoui first worshipped in Britain has welcomed the life sentence given to the Frenchman. Abdul Haq Baker who chairs the Brixton Mosque in south London said he believed Moussaoui 37 had deliberately sought the death penalty. He was relieved the verdict would not allow Moussaoui to be seen as a martyr. But UK-based relatives of those killed in the attacks were divided on whether he should have been sentenced to death.
