Aerospace & engineering group Rolls- Royce has threatened to cut 1 700 jobs at its Parsons turbine factory. It said it would issue "protective" redundancy notices to staff at the factory in Newcastle later this week. Staff will lose their jobs if the company does not find a buyer within three months. But the firm said it was hopeful of finding a buyer & talks were in progress with interested parties.

Board of Trade President Ian Lang said the Elgin Franklin & Shearwater fields meant "enormous opportunities" for the offshore industry. He said building the infrastructure would produce £2.5bn worth of orders. Yards on Teesside & Tyneside have already won orders worth £300m for the building of platforms.
A rainwear factory in Middlesbrough is set to close with the loss of 255 jobs according to union officials. The GMB union says staff at the Dannimac factory were told of the closure yesterday. Cheaper production costs in factories abroad especially in the Philippines are being blamed. The GMB says the closure part of a programme of 500 jobs cuts will be implemented over 18 months.
President Yeltsin has cancelled all meetings for the next few days in order to have more tests in advance of his planned heart by-pass operation. A Kremlin spokesman said the decision had been taken on the advice of Mr Yeltsin's doctors. Preparations for the operation had entered their final stage he said. "The President will undergo a whole series of medical tests under a special regime in the next few days " he added.
